TELL YOUR PARLIAMENTARY DEPUTY THAT YOU WANT MALTA TO REGAIN INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM
In the seven years 2007 – 2014 the Maltese and Gozitans are going to pay the European Union €420,000,000
By
Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici
On the eve of a new year we make some resolutions that we intend to implement in the coming 12 months.
The
CNI
resolution for 2006 is one: that we increase our work and efforts to explain to
more people that the agreement that was made for membership in the European
Union is more damaging than good for our country and that it has to be changed
today before tomorrow with a new partnership agreement with the Union countries.
To those who ask us whether we can leave the European Union, we answer
unhesitatingly that we can leave without any hindrance.
Whoever says that if we leave the Union we will have to give back to the Union
the aid that it would have given us, he will be wrong, because we are not
obliged to give back anything to the Union.
Moreover, it can be said that it is the Union that should make good for all the destruction and damage that membership in the Union shall have made to the economy and the social life of our people.
It is better for us to leave the Union
There are some who insist that it is not better for us to leave the Union.
But
when we consider all the effects and consequences of membership in the Union on
our country, we find that it is much better for us to leave.
It is not true that if we leave the Union we will lose the advantages of selling
in the markets of the Union countries products manufactured by us, and services
given by us.
Prior to becoming members in the Union, we used to export to the Union countries more than we are exporting now that we are members.
Countries
that are outside the Union are increasing their exports to the Union and if
Malta shall be outside the Union, there shall be no reason why we cannot do the
same.
If we get rid of the yoke of the Union rules, we would be able to come to an
agreement with the countries that are not in the Union to trade with them, or
increase trade with them, that today we are prevented from doing due to the
Union policy.
The
Union reduces our competitivity
If we are not members in the Union, the costs of production in our country will not continue to increase so much that they do not allow us to be more competitive, as we are seeing happening after we became Union members.
With a lower cost of production and with more competitivity, we shall have more
possibility of attracting productive investment towards our country.
After we became members in the Union, we are seeing the rate of productive investment getting lower and not increasing.
When we were not in the Union, we attracted foreign productive investment towards our country and created work and employment.
When
we became Union members, foreign investment dried up and work and employment
were reduced.
Lay offs increased and unemployment increased.
Due to the Union policy and regulations, the Government cannot give the aid that
we used to give so that enterprises can continue to develop and employ Maltese
workers.
When
we leave the Union, we can again implement a policy that helps the enterprises
and protects the employment of the workers.
New work and new employments are things that our people require most to move
forward and sustain the social services and pensions.
With membership in the Union we can neither create new work nor new employment in our country and neither can we maintain solidly the social services and pensions that we have.
We
guard against globalization
With our membership in the Union, we cannot take the necessary protective
measures to not allow trade globalization and market liberalization totally
destroy our industries and local trade and destroy the many entrepreneurs and
hundreds of workers and employees end up without work.
Because the policy of the Union is to increase globalization of trade and liberalization of markets and does this at the expense of enterprises and employment in the countries members in the union, including Malta.
Against the fierce strength of the winds we shall build walls of shelter and
against the waves of the sea we shall build a breakwater to stop them.
Against
the globalization tsunami, the European Union wants us to dismantle all the
protection that we have and open wide for it to destroy our economic and social
structures that our people had build in the past.
We should not forget that trade globalization is built on the exploitation of
the workers in countries where the working conditions are the worst.
The
European Union, with its encouragement for trade globalization, is supporting
the scandalous exploitation of millions of workers.
If we leave the Union, we shall not support this scandalous exploitation of the
workers, and again we shall have the power to adopt all the necessary measures
to stop the destruction of globalization and trade liberalization.
With a new agreement of partnership with the countries of the European Union, we can do all this in the interest of our people.
The
EU anti-national policy
The European
Union blessed and supported the destruction of the national company Sea Malta
and the loss of employment of its workers and the income to the Maltese economy
of the payments for merchandise transport that Sea Malta used to bring to our
country and take from our country every week.
With the scandalous decision of the dissolution of Sea Malta, the Government
capriciously decided to lay off its 144 workers.
And because it does not have the courage to appear that it is laying-off the Sea Malta workers, the Government conducted a dishonest campaign to put the blame on their union.

But
notwithstanding the complicity of the media in this cowardly attempt to hide the
shame of the laying off of 144 workers that it caused, the people now understand
the Prime Minister Gonzi and Minister Austin Gatt are responsible that 144
families are going through the Christmas and New Year festivities unhappy about
the loss of their means of earning their living of the head of those families.
The laying off of those workers is the worst aspect of the Sea Malta
issue.
But
this issue has many other ugly aspects that discredit the Government and expose
it to the condemnation of the people, while leading the people to despise the
privatization policy that the European Union imposes on its member countries.
The Maltese people believe that the social obligation to provide work and
employment to the workers comes before the privatization policy that the
European Union insists upon.
The
people do not understand why the profit that can be made by the people’s
enterprises should not be allowed, and instead be given to one person or to a
number of private persons.
The profit or loss of enterprises does not depend on who their owners are, but
on their management.
An efficient management of a national enterprise renders profit as much as if it had been a private enterprise.
But the European Union does not want the people to enjoy the profits of the enterprises.
It wants all the profit to be enjoyed by the private sector.
And
to sustain this, the Union mixes the management of enterprises with who are
their owners that take their profit.
The private sector is encouraged to make investments that render good
profits.
Why
should not the Government in the name of the people have investments that render
good profit, as Mid-Med Bank used to make, and as is being done by the Bank of
Valletta?
It is the mistaken policy of the Union that does not care about the people’s interests but of only those few who already have great wealth.
Sea Malta was the victim of this anti-national policy.
