A call to the candidates for the European Parliament

By Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici

The one hundred and forty-three thousand, who in the referendum voted against the agreement made by the Nationalist Government with the European Union, have done so because they believe that the agreement is damaging to Malta.

If they did not believe so, they would not have had reason to vote against it.

If the agreement that had been concluded is damaging to our country, we have no reason to accept it, neither will it be beneficial to the Labour Party to accept it.

This is because the good of the country comes before the good of the party.

We should seek that the interests of our country come before those of our party.

The fact that a small majority voted in favour of the agreement does not oblige us to accept it.

It obliges us to allow the majority to try to implement it, while we try to persuade it why it should not implement it.

The fact that it is an agreement that causes us damage obliges us not to accept it.

Not accepting it does not mean that we ignore it.

It means that we work to change the reality of damage created by it.

Once we believe that the agreement is damaging to us, we have a duty to see whether we can change it.

We have no right to say that once the majority wanted it, we should not change it even though we can do so.

If we can change the agreement that had been made, we need to see whether it is better for us to do so.

We require to compare the damage that we believe the agreement is causing to our country with what damage shall be caused to us if we change the agreement.

When we say we change the agreement that had been concluded, we will be saying that we make instead another agreement that would not be damaging to us.

Then, if we change the agreement that was concluded, not only shall we not be causing more damage that good, but change the damage that is being caused to us with the agreement that we make instead of it.

If instead of the damage that is being caused by the agreement that was concluded we conclude an agreement instead which does good, the country acquires wealth.

If it is better for the country, the Labour Party is duty bound to change the agreement.

If it is better for the country that the agreement be changed, it will be better for the Party.

If the Labour Party agrees that the agreement be changed, they are mistaken those who say that it is not good for the party to work to change the agreement.

They are mistaken those who say that it is not good for the party to work for the agreement to be changed, if those who say so think so.

If they say so it is not because they think so, but because it is better for them, then not only they are mistaken, but they are in mortal sin because they are putting their personal interests before the interests of the country and before the interests of the workers for whom the Workers Party was set up.

I should understand that the Labour candidates that are going to stand for election of the European Parliament believe what the party had insisted that the agreement is damaging for our people.

In this election, for them to be believed by the Labour voters, they need to show that they are going to work to put aside that what is causing that damage to our people.

The reason for the damage is the agreement that had been concluded.

That is why, the Labour voters have a right to expect the Labour candidates to bind themselves to work to change the agreement which is the cause of is much damage to our people and especially our workers.

Those who voted in favour of the agreement, but who have already been hit with its negative effects, and those who are now seeing that they are going to be hit, in the 12 June election will vote for those candidates who they see as offering then hope that with their work they will change the agreement.

If the Labour candidates offer them this hope, they would be right to expect the support not only of the Labourites who believed that the agreement is damaging to our country, but also of those who had believed that the agreement was going to be good, but found out, or are seeing, that it is greatly damaging to our people.

This is the new political reality after the agreement that one year ago the majority approved and that today it is not to its liking.
