The Labour Party and the European Union Constitution: The first comments on the three reports

By Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Chairman CNI

Last Tuesday a mountain moved and got pregnant with three tiny mice.

Not in size because two of them are really fat.

This is the impression that I formed when I read the three reports that the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party took the trouble to address a press conference to show them to the media, and which later, I went to collect from the National Centre.

Before I say where I do not agree with the reports and why I do not agree, I feel that forthwith I should make critical comments about what happened.

Two of the reports were ready before November of last year and in these five months that have since passed, it appears that they have not even examined them nor studied them.

The reports are full of mistakes that reveal that in five months they did not even make their proof reading.

It was stated that one of the reports was made by two persons.

Although it is written in the plural, according to information that I have it was made by a single person.

It is not right that who knows this, gives the impression that the report was made by two persons.

It is not right that in the report it is stated that it is a valuation by the Labour Party.

After all the reports do not discuss fundamental points that the EU Constitution raises, while other important points are discussed wither in a superficial manner of altogether in an unfocussed manner.

I feel sorry for the Labour Delegates that are going to be given reports that are too thick with a mass of irrelevant words for the issues that the Delegates have to decide, and above all, an unbalanced and unclear picture of arguments in favour and against.

Notwithstanding all the obstacles that I am finding to have personal access to the delegates, I am doing all I can to inform them of the reasons for which the Labour Party should not vote with the Government in favour of the European Union Constitution that pretends that the laws that the Union makes shall be superior to the Constitution made by the Maltese people.
