A demand for the resignation of Simon Busuttil and those who assured Spring hunting: The Government is going to lose its case in the European Court - Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici
The question that is being asked by hunters now that the spring hunting season in not going to be opened is whether there is any hope that it will be opened in the coming years.
Although many have lost all hope that it will be reopened, there are many hunters who are hoping that the Maltese Government the pending case before the European Court.
But about this issue the Chairman of the Campaign for National Independence (CNI) Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici yesterday spoke in the clearest manner.
In an answer to a question by l-Orizzont, the ex-Prime Minister made it clear that
“the Government is going to lose the case. This is for the simple reason that it is clearly being said that the common heritage is more important and above the hunter’s interests. You cannot get any other answer”,
he
said.
While he did not enter into the merits of Spring hunting, Dr Mifsud Bonnici said
that the manner in which the issue of Spring has developed there appears to be
two alternatives for the Member of the European Parliament Simon Busuttil, the
European Commissioner Joe Borg, the President of the Republic Eddie Fenech Adami
and the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
These
are either that they resign because their assurances were deceitfully given or
otherwise the other alternative to insist that the agreement with the European
Commission must be honoured.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said that the Government had already lost two occasions with
which it could have exerted pressure on the European Commission to honour its
agreement that the Maltese Government have always said that it had acquired and
negotiated.
This
was the signing of the Lisbon Treaty and when Bulgaria and Romania became full
members.
He emphasized that on these two occasions the Government could have exerted
pressure so that the European Commission honour the agreement and this by not
signing or agree with the Lisbon Treaty and on the entry of Bulgaria and
Romania.
The Campaign for National Independence Chairman said that,
“the
decision of the European Union Court that ordered the Maltese Government not to
allow the hunting of quails and turtle doves in Spring raises fundamental
principle issues. Without one entering into the merits of Spring hunting, there
is also the “good faith” of the European Commission when it negotiated with
the Maltese Government our country’s membership in the EU, as well as the
assurances that were given to the Maltese people and the hunters prior to the
Referendum in 2003 by the Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, by the Vice Prime
Minister Lawrence Gonzi, by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Joe Borg and by the
MIC chairman Dr Simon Busuttil.”
Dr Mifsud Bonnici reiterated that the Maltese Government assured the people and the hunters that the EU had understood that Spring hunting was to continue.
The people and the hunters voted in favour of the membership agreement with those assurances in their minds.
He
also said that today the Government is accusing the European Commission that it
is backtracking from the agreement that it had concluded with it on Spring
hunting.
“Now the
European commission has obtained from the European Union Court the order for the
Government not to implement what it had agreed with the European Commission on
Spring hunting.”
Dr Mifsud Bonnici continued to say that,
“in
front of this bad action of the European Commission and the arbitrary order of
the European Union Court, the Maltese Government, the President of the Republic
Fenech Adami, the Prime Minister
Gonzi, the European Commissioner Joe Borg and the European Parliament Member
Busuttil, have two alternatives.”
“Either
they resign because their assurances that they had given to the Maltese people
and the hunters were found to be false and given with deceit, or insist that the
agreement with the European Commission was as they are insisting.”
“Once the
EU is not honouring that agreement, the membership agreement in the EU should
fall and Malta is no longer a member in the European Union",
said
the CNI Chairman.
