More information about the European Union
Some years ago the European Union decided to reduce the amount of wheat that the Union countries can produce, because it said that there was excessive wheat production.
It therefore decided that ten percent of land should
remain fallow.
The Union neither took into consideration that there are
millions of hungry people in the world, nor did it care less that the more wheat
there is the lower will be its price.
Now there is a shortage of wheat and its price is very high.
The Agriculture Ministers of the Union member countries
later this month will discuss whether to remove the decision that ten per cent
of land shall remain fallow, with the hope that next year wheat production of
will increase between ten and 17 million tons.
According to the European Union Common Fisheries Policy,
there is a quota of how much fish can be landed and what size they have to be.
Fish that is smaller than the size decided by the European Union and fish caught above the quota has to be thrown back into the sea.
Ninety-nine percent of the fish die.
In the English Channel region and the Welsh and Irish waters, about 60 percent
of fish that is caught is thrown back dead into the sea, according to what the
Union wants.
Every year, thousands of tons of cod are thrown back dead.
Last year, in the North Sea, 8,000 tons were thrown back.
This is scandalous waste and the loss of good food and also reduces the
reproduction of fish if it was not thrown back dead.
Finland is protesting against the European Union proposal
that provides that in all the Union countries permission to keep a shotgun shall
only be granted to persons over 18 years of age.
Finland, where the legal age is 15 years, is insisting
that this Union proposal penalizes teenager hunters and is going to create a
great reaction against the European Union.
Because of the European Union industrial and commercial policy, products that were previously manufactured in the Union countries are no longer manufactured.
This means a loss of jobs.
Half the toys that are sold in the Union markets are
imported from China, where the Western countries are exploiting the low wages of
the Chinese workers, women and children.
The Union European Commission was last week found guilty by the Union Court of having committed an error when it denied journalists from having access for documents that the Commission submitted to the Court in cases between a number of commercial companies and the Commission.
The Court therefore cancelled the European Commission
decision.
The denial of the documents to the journalists has shown
how useless were the regulations that the Union made in 2001 about the Union’s
documents transparency.
The International Association of Journalists that had initiated the action
against the European Commission insisted after the Court decision, that it is
going to continue to press the Union for transparency in its work, because
according to democracy, the Union should not be secretive except where
confidential commercial information is concerned.
The European Commission used to say that the “partnership” does not exist.
Now next October the European Commission and Ukraine are going to hold talks to strengthen the “Partnership Agreement” that they had made some years ago.
This “Partnership Agreement” was made after what
became know as the “Orange Revolution” in 2004 that gave Victor Yushcenko
leadership of the country.
The Ukraine “Partnership Agreement” is part of the policy known as
“Neighbourhood Policy” that the European Union applies to certain
neighbouring countries.
It is suitable for Malta when it shall again be
independent.
Timely
criticism of the reform treaty
The British journalist Christopher Booker is known as one of the best critics of the European Union.
Every week he writes articles about the Union in prominent journals.
It could therefore be expected that he will comment on the
new treaty (known as the Reform Treaty) that the leaders of the Union countries
agreed about during their last summit in Berlin, last June.
Booker raised many important points about the Union Reform Treaty.
A main point is about the changes that will occur in the
Union European Council that is composed of all the leaders of its countries that
meet every few months in summits.
Till now the European Council served for every leader to represent the
Government of the country and protect the national interests of his country in
all issues that were discussed and decided.
Therefore the summits were considered as
intergovernmental, that is, between governments.
Christopher Booker explained how the new Treaty is going to change the status of the European Council.
The Treaty is going to make the Council one of the official institutions or organs of the Union, the same as the European Commission and the European Parliament.
With the powers and obligations that it is going to be
given, the European Council is going to function as the Government Cabinet of
the new Union that will sprout if the Treaty enters into effect.
Booker insists on this because while today the leader of every Union country, during the summits of the European Council represents his country and protects its national interests, with the new Treaty the loyalty of every leader shall be to the European Union.
The main scope of his work during the European Council
summits is now going to be to promote the Union values, to promote its aims, and
serve its interests and that this scope comes before any loyalty to his country.
According to Booker, the aims of the European Union, in the new Treaty are
explained in such a wide manner that you can say that there is nothing that can
be considered as not forming part of the aims of the Union.
The Treaty makes clear that the European Union shall now
have the power to draft a policy on nearly everything during the European
Council summits.
The new Treaty makes it possible that the European Council gives new powers to
the European Union that presently it doesn’t have in its treaties.
With the new Treaty the European Council is being given a
“blank cheque” on which can be written the amount of money that the council
would want and when it wants.
As an example of how the European Council can use this
power given to it by the new Treaty, Booker mentions the case that the Council
decides that the European Union starts to acquire funds directly from the
citizens of the Union countries by imposing a tax on them.
Today the Union does not have the power to do so, but if the new Treaty enters
into effect, the Council can give power to the Union to make such a tax.
Therefore Christopher Booker is right to insist that the
new Treaty witnesses the will of the European Union to govern more and more the
member countries and that gives it nearly limitless powers on them.
He considers that this Treaty, if it comes into effect, would mean a “Coup d’Etat” that erodes the governments of the Union member countries and brings to nothing the democracy in them.
We believe that the majority of the Maltese people do not
approve that the new Treaty comes into effect.
We have long been saying that they want to brainwash the
children and the students in our schools about things connected with Malta’s
membership in the European Union.
We had said that they want to introduce studies about the Union after they had introduced European Studies in our schools.
Although up to now they have not yet introduced EU studies
in the schools curriculum, they have found the propitious moment so that from
the beginning of this scholastic year the children and students will find a new
subject that they have to study – everything that has to do with the Ewro
currency.
According to the newspaper that is issued every now and then by the Committee
responsible for the adoption of the Ewro in our country – the NECC – the
Maltese and Gozitan children and students “are not only going to learn about
the Ewro coins and Euro paper money, or the value of the Ewro in everyday life,
but they are also going to cover the history of the Ewro, why this new currency
had been created in Europe and the benefits of the adoption of this
international currency for our country”.
If the scope of the introduction of this new subject was only for the children
and students to learn about the value of the Ewro coins and Ewro paper money so
as to be able to compare them with the Maltese coins and lira that is going to
be withdrawn, one could understand it.
But that they want to inculcate into the minds of children and students even the
history of the Ewro, why it was created and the benefits of the adoption of this
currency, is only an exercise of “brainwashing” of Maltese and Gozitan
children and students.
We shall not believe even for a single moment that they will teach the children and students the truth of why the Ewro was created.
Or that they are going to also tell them the disadvantages of the single currency for all the EU countries, apart from telling them what are the benefits.
More than learning, this is going to be a propaganda
exercise because since they are not going to have full information, our children
and students will be fed misinformation.
Apart from this shortcoming, we have to make another extremely serious comment.
To introduce this new subject into our country’s schools
curriculum, it must have been necessary that time from some other subject or
subjects had to be reduced.
It is good to know whether this new subject for EU propaganda is going to also
be part of the curriculum for the coming years.
Neither the Department nor the Minister for Education gave information about
this new subject.
Nothing has yet been said in Parliament.
We expect the people’s representatives to insist that
the required information be given without any delay.
