A wind of change is blowing in the European Union.
After
the French and the Dutch denied the European Constitution and the Union leaders
did not agree on the structure of the Union budget, the widespread opinion in
Europe is that a radical change is needed in the Union so that the people can
have trust in our future.
The European Constitution is now being considered irrelevant in the profound
crisis that the Union is in.
If
some Union countries are going to continue with the process of ratification of
the European Constitution, they are only going to do so as a symbolic exercise
to show that they still believe in the European Union, but at the same time
knowing that the Constitution is not going to come into effect.
In the European Union they know that there is the need for a reform of the rules
and a revision of the policy of the Union and that the Union Constitution as
drafted, has to be changed to make way for the reform and the revision that the
people of Europe are insisting that should be made.
Therefore, we are in an interesting time and of opportunities for the political
leaders to have a vision of how to recognize to transform the present European
Union from an organization riddled with enormous bureaucracy and great
corruption, to a different union of free countries to develop in a manner that
is more suitable for their circumstances, while helping each other in any manner
and in any sector that they agree between themselves.
The Malta Labour Party should avail itself to rise on the wind of change that is blowing in Europe.
The
Party should not hold back from making concrete proposals of how to increase
work and employment in the European and Mediterranean countries.
It should insist that the strengthening of the social services, together with
the reduction on military spending and on armaments be the main thinking in the
drafting of the economic policy of the European and Mediterranean countries.
It should insist that the European and Mediterranean countries deny forever war
and bind themselves to work for peace and the protection of sustainable
environment.
We remember that 30 years ago the Labour Party that was in Government had the
sense and ability to convince all the states of Europe and the United States of
America and the Soviet Union to tie security in Europe with security in the
Mediterranean.
Today, the Labour Party in Opposition, and tomorrow more in Government, has the
beautiful challenge to work and lead the European Union countries to accept that
as in the case of security at the time of the Helsinki Conference 30 years ago,
similarly economic, commercial, technological and social cooperation should be
one in Europe and in the Mediterranean.
Instead of making a Treaty that establishes a Constitution for Europe, let us make a Treaty of Cooperation in every sector between the countries of Europe and the Mediterranean.
The
failure of the European Constitutional Treaty and the profound crisis of the
European Union offer a great political opportunity to the Malta Labour Party to
take the initiative for the building of a new structure of an everlasting
European and Mediterranean cooperation.
Should not we find youths of ability, zeal and courage to undertake this vision
and make it real, with great honour for Malta and the Malta Labour Party?
