The EU is causing damage to our country

It is not true that we cannot leave the European Union

The two biggest enterprises that employ more than 4,000 employees between them, STmicroelectronics and the Malta Shipyards are passing through great difficulties part of which are the fault of the regulations that the European Union forced our country to adopt when it became a member in the Union.

As a consequence of the membership in the Union, we introduced the Euro common currency, which due to its strength when compared with the American Dollar and Sterling, increased the expenses for enterprises in our country and reduced the value of sales that are made with the dollar and sterling.

This factor hit badly both STmicroelectronics as well as the Malta Shipyards.

The levies and taxes that the European Union forced our country to impose on diesel and other oil products continue to increase more their prices and continue to increase the expenses of the enterprises that use them, as well as their expense for the electricity that they consume.

The VAT tax that the European Union insists to be paid on products and services continued to increase their prices and therefore increased the expenses for the enterprises that use them.

All these negative factors, a result from membership in the European Union, are increasing the burden on our country’s enterprises.

With them is added another negative factor that the European Union does not allow aid to be given by the Government to the enterprises to be able to continue working and keep their workers in employment.

Apart from all these negative factors, in the case of the Malta shipyards, the European Union imposed continues that continue to shackle it more.

On the barefaced pretext of a seven-year restructuring plan between 2002 and 2009, the European Union limited the volume of work that can be made at the Shipyard.

The Union decided that the Shipyard cannot build ships with more than 10,000 tons of steel every year.

This limitation of 10,000 tons of steel every year imposed by the European Union made it impossible for the Malta shipyards to accept to take a contract for ten ships of around 30,000 tons each.

It has now been announced that the contract for the building of three of those ships with a value of a billion dollars has been taken by a shipyard in Poland.

The loss of this contract for the building of ships for the entrepreneur Joseph Cala gives credence to all those who insist that the European Union does not want to do anything to stop the Malta Shipyard from having to close after the end of this year when it will not be given more aid by the Government.

It is right that suspicions also falls on the Prime Minister Gonzi and Minister Gatt.

What are they doing so that the Malta Shipyards do not close down?

It was mentioned that part of it will be privatized.

This pleases the European Union, but will be damaging to the Dockyard if it loses that part of it that makes profit and therefore it is attractive for the private sector.

What is the use of what was said in the President’s speech at the opening of the Parliament that we have advantages and historical heritage in tradition of our Shipyards, if then we do not have the courage to tell the European Union that at all costs the Shipyard must not be closed and the tradesmen should not be sent to do work that does not require any trade?

Our country cannot bear to throw away the human resources of people trained in trades at the Shipyard as has happened five years ago when hundreds of tradesmen were discharged from the Shipyard and sent on Government, Parastatal and Local Councils work, that did not require and trade.

We need to stand up to the European Union and not allow it to continue damaging our country and our workers.

The European Union is increasing the cost of living

It appears that there is a competition among politicians on whoever among them licks mostly the EU.

They think that with this they will gain votes.

They do not know that they are losing their honour and reduce the workers respect for them.

Especially from the thousands of workers who because of European Union membership, either lost their employment or had their previous working conditions reduced.

Many of the problems that we are facing today are either a consequence of the policy and regulations of the European Union, or we would have overcome them better had we not been shackled with the policy and regulations that the Union forces us to observe.

A main problem is that of the high cost of living.

The European Union policy on the cost of living is to leave the market and competition to regulate the prices and does not permit the Government to control them.

We see the results of this policy in the manner where every day prices increase without the increases in wages increasing enough to keep up with the increase in prices.

With the lack of price control, the European Union continues to aggravate the problem of the high cost of living by burdening the prices with VAT imposed on them.

The more an object or a service increases in cost, the greater the amount of VAT that is paid on it.

When an object or service costs ten Euros, a Euro and eight cents VAT is paid on it.

When the same object and service costs double the amount, 20 Euros, three Euros and sixty cents VAT are paid on it.

In this manner the EU policy that insists that VAT is paid on every object and service, it is continuing to increase the prices of objects and services.

If we really want to control the cost of living, we should first understand that we have to abandon the European Union policy that VAT is paid at a percentage of the value of the objects and services.

Because even when the same percentage of tax remains the same, the amount of tax increases when the object or service costs more.

If the Government feels that it can get less from taxes and therefore can reduce them, the first thing that it should do is to reduce the rate of VAT.

Thus everyone will save and the people will have more money in their hands to spend, while the prices decrease.

This fiscal measure does not please the European Union that sustains a policy that imposes more indirect taxes while reducing direct taxes.

With less taxes on income, those whose income is greater benefit more and those whose income is low will not benefit at all.

With a lower tax on objects and services, those who spend everything that they get will benefit more, for the living requirements.

That is why in the choice between one tax and the other, there is an ethical principle of social justice that the European Union does not believe in.

Our country has the misfortune that for the politicians, the licking of the European Union is more important than the social principles that we used to observe prior to union membership.

To again find our social bearings, we have to get away from the EU’s anti-social policy.

For this to happen, the politicians have to remove their ambitions and personal interests that are satisfied by the EU and instead protect the interests of the majority of the people, that the Union is not interested about them.

The European Union is militarizing itself

Instead of encouraging general disarmament, the European Union is insisting for more expenditure on armaments.

France and Germany are the most that are insisting that the Union should be a strong military force because according to them, this is the only way how the Union can spread its policy and economic beliefs around the world.

You expect that for many European Union countries, the political and economic strength of the Union are not enough, if there is not also military strength with it.

Because most of them have in their blood the microbe that wants to dominate other people.

For whole centuries

* many of the Union countries -

* France,

* England,

* Germany,

* The Netherlands,

* Spain,

* Portugal,

* Italy,

* Austria –

Used to rule their colonies scattered in the four corners of the world

Now they have passed on their colonizer blood to the Union that they are managing and want the Union to get under its claws as many other people as possible, as it has already done to our country.

When during the next six months starting from next July the French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be the European Council President, it is expected that he will push forward the building of the European Army and the buying of armaments by the European Union countries to strengthen their military forces.

He insists on a common defense for all the Union countries because he believes that it protects their security.

The French Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bernard Kouchner, at the beginning of this week said that the European Union will not have influence on other countries if there is not a common European defence.

Of the same opinion is the German Minister for Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who earlier this month, spoke in favour of the setting up of a European armed forces and showed his wish that this happens without delay.

He showed that the Lisbon Treaty is going to hasten the road for this.

The Polish Defense Minister, Bogdam Klich, a few days ago said that he expects that the European Union will not take long to discuss how to increase its military capabilities.

The Lisbon Treaty makes possible the military integration of the member countries by stating that there should be a progressive drafting of a common defence policy agreed unanimously by the European Council.

Malta, with contempt for neutrality, is going to find itself mangled in the European Union war machinery.
