Support is given by the people to a political party because of the beliefs of the party and on the party people that are ready to work and sacrifice themselves to implement those beliefs.
The Labour Party believed that the Constitution of our country had to be made by the Maltese people.
And
when it took the management of our country it implemented that belief.
The Labour Party also believed that the Maltese Constitution had to be the
highest and supreme law in the country.
And
when it was in government, it implemented that belief.
To implement its beliefs, the Labour Party worked hard for a number of years to
succeed to convince the majority of the people to embrace these Labour
beliefs.
Not
the Party ceded its beliefs to acquire the support of the majority, but the
Party kept its beliefs to win the support of the majority for the beliefs of the
Party.
Thus the Labour Party grew and was strengthened, not by throwing away its
beliefs to run after the majority, but by working hard to bring the majority to
embrace the beliefs of the Party.
Thus if the Labour Party wants to remain a big party, strong, and united, it has
to keep its belief that the Maltese Constitution remains the highest and supreme
law for our people and every law made by the European Union, in which we are
members, shall not be higher and supreme than the Constitution of the Maltese
people.
This is our fundamental belief and we should not deny it for any reason.
When the majority of the Maltese people see that the Labour Party is not going to be drawn as is going to be made by the untrue Nationalist Government to cede the supremacy of the Constitution of the Maltese people to the laws that the European Union makes, the majority of the Maltese and Gozitans will come to understand that it is only the Labour Party that does not sell itself to the foreigner and neither throws away its soul for political convenience.
The majority two years ago did not vote for the laws of the European Union to overcome and prevail over our Constitution.
The majority only voted in favour that the laws of the Union overcome the laws made by the Maltese Parliament.
Thus
the majority ceded the supremacy of the Maltese Parliament and passed it on to
the European Union.
But the European Union is not happy that it took the supremacy of our Parliament
with the membership of our country in the Union.
Now
it also wants to take the supremacy of our Constitution by forcing the Labour
Opposition to vote with the Nationalist Government in favour of the obscene
legal principle that there is in the new European Constitution that states that
the laws that the Union makes shall be superior not only to the laws of the
Maltese Parliament, but even to the Constitution of the Maltese people.
It was on the initiative and work of the Labour Party in bygone years that the Maltese Constitution was made.
It
has to be the Labour opposition that today has to prevent the Maltese
Constitution from being trampled upon under the feet of the foreigners who found
the Nationalist Government ready to betray the Maltese Constitution to which it
had sworn to be faithful and loyal.
Is the Labour Party going to be an accomplice in this betrayal of the
Constitution of Malta and of the breach of the oath of loyalty to it?
The Labour delegates will not permit this.
