TELL YOUR PARLIAMENTARY DEPUTY THAT YOU WANT MALTA TO REGAIN INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM

In the seven years 2007 – 2014 the Maltese and Gozitans are going to pay the European Union €420,000,000

The Labour Party should continue with its opposition to Malta’s EU membership agreement

By means of a letter sent confidentially to all the Delegates of the Labour Party, Doctor Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici appealed to them to give their support for a motion that is expected to be presented before the next General Conference which is going to encourage the Labour Party to continue with its opposition to Malta’s EU membership, because this is a disadvantageous agreement for the people, especially for the Maltese workers.

In his letter, to which the Labour Party leadership answered yesterday, Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici states that:

“It appears that we have some who insist that the Party should not continue to fight against the Membership Agreement that the Nationalist Government has concluded with the European Union, because the majority voted in its favour. It is also being said that for the Party to win the next election, it must put aside the European Union issue and that the General Conference in 2001 had decided that the Party accepts as conclusive the Election result. I am sorry that I do not agree with this reasoning.

First of all,

it is being forgotten that in the year 2003 (two years after the year 2001), the Party decided that if it wins the Election, just the same it was going to hold a referendum on Partnership and on Membership. Had we won, the Election result would not have been considered conclusive; why is it conclusive because we have lost?

Secondly,

on 14 July 2003, the Party voted in Parliament against the ratification of the Membership Agreement. If with the Election result we should no longer be against the Membership Agreement, why did we vote against the Agreement ratification on 14 July?

In the third instance,

if the Party insisted that the Membership Agreement that was made by the Nationalist Party was disadvantageous and damaging to the people, especially the workers, because a majority of 12 thousand voted had approved the Agreement, just the same it remained disadvantageous and damaging to the people and the workers.

In the fourth instance,

when in an election the majority chooses a party’s electoral programme, the other party does not change over and agree with the winning party’s programme an throws away its programme. The fact that the winning party is allowed to implement its programme does not prevent the losing party from continuing to do everything possible to persuade the people so that in the following Election the majority approves its programme. This is the rule of democracy and not that a party that loses an Election stops from continuing to insist on its programme.

Above all I remind you that in the issue of the Agreement concluded with the European Union there is the freedom of our people at issue, and there is the policy of neutrality and the policy of working for peace, and there is also the breach of our country’s Constitution. The Agreement that the Nationalist Party has concluded with the European Union makes us lose our freedom and the neutrality policy and the policy of working for peace, and breaches the Constitution.

It was the Labour Party that has acquired full freedom for the Maltese people and made our country neutral and active in working for peace. Now it is again our Party’s destiny to again lead the second fight to acquire back full freedom, of neutrality and of active work for peace. In the first fight, our predecessors were soldiers of steel. Like them we should be of steel, not sawdust. We win by fighting for what is rigth and not by accepting that which is wrong.

In the next General Conference I appeal to you to give your support for the motion that encourages the Labour Party to continue with its opposition to the Membership Agreement which is disadvantageous for the people and especially for the Maltese workers, and for it to be the leader of the Maltese people for acquiring back of full freedom; It will be the Party to lead the Maltese people to again embrace a policy of neutrality and of actively working for peace; it will be the Party to encourage the Maltese workers to unite to protect and increase work opportunities in our country; and it will be the Labour Party that raises the people to defend the Constitution drafted by the Labour governments of 1974 and 1987.

I hope that you agree with this. In any case, I appreciate if you tell me what you think.
