CAMPAIGN FOR NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE

Barroso's useless visit
Barroso’s visit was useless; he could have saved himself the trouble.
During the parliamentary sitting held on his behalf, we witnessed only play-acting.
He praises us and our representatives burn incense to him.
From the Strangers’ gallery the select guests applaud heartily.
Nothing useful and of any substance came out from the Parliamentary sitting.
We lost time and we lost the opportunity to make known to the President of the European Commission timely criticism about the E.U.’s shortcomings and its policy that is very harmful for our people.
Reference was made to the Constitutional Treaty, which was shunned by the people of France and Holland and unanimously approved by our parliamentary representatives two years ago.
According to these, this treaty should not undergo much change and they are ready to agree with the one that will substitute it even though they do not know what its contents will be.
It is enough that something is done to strengthen the E.U.
For our parliamentary representatives, the E.U. will be strengthened if the integration between member states is increased.
They do not possess the wisdom to understand that for the Maltese people, in order not to become extinct as a nation, the cooperation between member states of the Union should increase and not their integration.
Because our political, social and economical integration in the European Union will render us a small city in the Union and we will no longer be a small nation and a free state.
Our political representatives will see our people absorbed in the millions of Europe and become submerged in their customs.
For he who is servile this means nothing.
However, for he who possesses a strong stamina the plague would be preferable to losing his honour as a citizen of a free Malta.
Barroso has seen fit to praise us because during the three years that we have formed part of the E.U. we have improved, according to him.
Nobody had the guts to correct him.
Nobody reminded him that before the referendum they assured us that the worker would be better off by joining.
Experience gained during our three years of membership has shown hundred of workers who lost their job, hundreds of other jobs are threatened, others are losing certain conditions of employment previously enjoyed, while thousands of workers from outside the Union are depriving the Maltese of jobs.
Nobody told Barroso that by joining the E.U. the workers’ lot has not improved, far from it, in fact it has deteriorated.
This is the social Europe about which they are so proud!
A social Europe full of unemployment and an ever-increasing number of poor people.
They could at least have told Barroso that the plan worked out by the E.U. for the Dockyard was not good and there is the need for a new one, one which will strengthen and not weaken the Dockyard.
They were very wrong when they gave him the impression that everything was running smoothly in our country except for illegal immigration.
Because of the impression he obtained he will not be able to explain to his colleagues in the European Commission, the acute need we have for help to overcome our great difficulties, which we will be facing in the future, all the result of our joining the European Union.
FAULTY POLICY VIS-À-VIS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
The proposal of burden sharing of illegal immigrants, that is to say that these be shared between all member states of the European Union, depending on the size of the country’s population, is not the solution to the problem.
It is not the right solution because more immigrants are tempted to come once they know that the E.U. member states are willing to accept them.
There is only one solution.
If we want to stop this movement of illegal immigrants they must know that they will be sent back to where they came from.
If they would know that they will not be allowed to be absorbed in the E.U., they will not risk voyaging and risking their lives in vain.
As regards the problem created by illegal immigrants who do not say where they hail from, these should know that they would remain locked up until they speak up.
This approach will surely make them speak up.
This harsh approach to the problem of illegal immigrants does not mean that we should not do all we can at all times to save them from drowning, to feed them and take care of them as if they were Maltese.
But we should send them back because our country is not in a position to receive and accept more immigrants.
The illegal immigrants are to be pitied because organized businessmen who take their money promising them to take them to E.U. countries are exploiting them.
Immigrants are embarked on sea going vessels, unsuitable for the voyage in bad weather, filling them with the hope that someone would save them should they meet with any trouble or that they will succeed to reach undetected the first European land so that they will not be sent back.
Many of the immigrants end losing their life or losing their relatives during the trip.
Much has been said and is being said about surveillance by ships from E.U. countries under the Frontex organization set up to control the Mediterranean Seas.
Apart from the fact that these surveillance operations which have long been promised and yet have so far not materialized, it is not known if they would be effective in keeping away illegal immigrants from reaching our shores.
For if one of these vessels were to come across a boat full of immigrants, ordering it to return to its departure point and the said boat refuses what will the Frontex vessel do then?
Will it shoot at the boat?
Of course not!
And if the boat is about to sink will Frontex let it?
Neither.
It will be in duty bound to save the immigrants and take them to the nearest country to the place of accident.
That is what is happening today.
The E.U. does not have a good policy to deal with the problem of illegal immigrants.
It does not permit our country to deal with illegal immigrants as its sees fit, while at the same time the E.U. is not ready to shoulder their responsibility even though it knows that the illegal immigrants want to reach the big member states of the Union and that it was not their intention to end up in our country.
In the meantime the businessmen who are responsible for organizing the immigrants trips are getting richer and richer through the fares charged.
Many others find themselves locked up for months on end deprived of liberty and their relatives.
And this tragedy knows no end, year after year, for we lack the courage to stand up to the E.U.
THE TOUGH HEART OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
We were assured that the E.U. has no say in the taxes imposed by member states.
But this is not true.
The Union imposes on member states to collect VAT.
Not only, but the E.U. even lays down what articles and services should carry VAT charges.
The Union wants everyone to pay the same rate of VAT, be he rich or poor, on the articles one buys and the services one receives.
This is the reason why VAT is socially unjust.
According to social justice he who possess the means ought to pay more tax than he who lacks the means.
The Union is insensitive to the needs of the sick, those who have special needs, and persons with a disability.
It does not exempt them from VAT.
Proof of the harsh heartedness of the E.U. is to be found in this year’s Legal Notice 123, issued by the Government to comply with the E.U.’s regulations.
With these regulations Government has imposed a 5% VAT on domestic help service for the care of young children, caring for the elderly, caring for the sick and caring for disabled persons.
Before joining the E.U the Maltese people were kind enough to give such services to young children, to the elderly, to the sick and to disabled persons and not impose a tax on them, as the Union wants.
We should not accept this cruelty which hails from the E.U. and which goes against the social belief of the Maltese people.
The Maltese people are of the opinion that the sick should be provided with free hospital treatment.
Contrary to this belief, this year Legal Notice 123 is imposing VAT on the expense of domestic help for the elderly in their homes.
Because the E.U. wants it, VAT is paid by disabled persons on articles they buy for themselves, such as wheelchairs, among other items.
It is a very cruel EU heart that imposes such a tax on items necessary to persons suffering from a disability.
THE EUROPEAN UNION’S APOTHEOSY
According to Reuter, the popular acceptance for the E.U. in member states is continuously decreasing because of the fear that the Union is not protecting the workers from the bad effects of globalization and because the people are seeing that they are losing their national identity while the Union is interfering too much in the national affairs of the member states.
According to the research carried out by the think tank Open Europe in those E.U. countries that have introduced the Euro, almost half the people would like to have again the national currency they had prior to the Euro.
Even the Germans seem cynic about the bureaucracy of the Union when it commands their life from Brussels.
They are fed up with the huge quantity of regulations laid down by the Union.
They are also dissatisfied by the fact that the representatives not elected by the people have the power to issue these regulations, often holding meetings which cost large sums of money paid for from people’s taxes.
During such meetings much is said but little is done.
With the celebrations held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaty, the Union wanted to revive a bigger popular acceptance.
In spite of the huge propagandistic expense it incurred, it was hardly successful.
Not even the leaders of member states were roused enough to be able to overcome the differences between them to reach an agreement which all could sign.
The lack of agreement between the leaders of the member states was the reason why the Declaration of Berlin, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Union was not signed by them but by the President of the European Council, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, by the President of the European Commission, Manuel Barroso and by the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering.
A year ago Barroso had declared that he wished that the Declaration of Berlin would be signed by the leaders of the 27 member states of the Union.
He had said that in this way it could be shown that there was a common willingness by the member states to work together with the European Parliament and with the European Commission in all the Union’s institutions.
However Barroso’s wish did not materialize.
The Declaration of Berlin did not even please the Pope because no mention was made in it about Christianity.
The Pope asked how could the Union be nearer to its people when it denies an essential part of the identity of its history?
Notwithstanding, some Christian Maltese boast about the values of the Union!
