TELL YOUR PARLIAMENTARY DEPUTY THAT YOU WANT MALTA TO REGAIN INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM
In the seven years 2007 – 2014 the Maltese and Gozitans are going to pay the European Union €360,000,000
By
the Rev Ang Seychell
Presently in Malta two new Idols have appeared – the European Union and privatization.
The
political parties, trade unions, constituted bodies, all are kneeling in front
of the EU and in front of privatization.
This mania started with the European Union.
It
was split between two nearly equal halves – half in favour and half against
– and suddenly the two halves competing between themselves who is the most
European and in favour of all that comes from the EU!
You cannot be against the EU.
You cannot blaspheme with the EU.
You cannot fight against the EU.
Even if tiny Malta is filling up with illegal immigrants and none of the partners in the EU even tried to take a few hundreds of them to reduce the problem.
The hour of reckoning has come and we remained alone.
No one stamped his foot down and showed his disapproval in the most concrete manner.
We
remained discussing and meeting and hoping and asking for charity and nothing
happens!
When we were a British colony we used to protest and send delegations and
organize public meetings.
Now we do nothing.
If you want to say something against the EU, say it in whispers or in corridors because you will be marked.
We became worse than when we were a British colony.
We
have become a Brussels colony and became worse then we were before independence.
Referendum
But there is one clear indication that who is leading on this road is living far away from the EU’s peoples pulse.
Every time they had a chance to show what they are feeling in a referendum, the peoples of the EU made it clear that hey are feeling a lot different from the leaders of the constituted bodies and political parties.
When the people of France and The Netherlands and Ireland were given a chance to say what they think, they always went against the thinking of their leaders!
It
clearly appears that in Europe a new aristocracy has developed that is living in
a world of its own and is getting farther away from the problems that are
burdening the masses of the populations!
Privatization
– another Idol
Presently
in Malta another Idol has appeared.
Privatization has appeared.
There is a need that everything that the state or Maltese society has that is useful has to be privatized.
We are selling everything and saying that everything that is privatized is successful and that it is better for the country.
And
the more they are fat cows the more we enjoy privatizing them.
Now the government has created the Shipyard issue.
Its workers were doing well.
They were working diligently, doing the work at the agreed time, sometimes even before the agreed time.
Prior
to the election they were told that they should put their minds at rest about
their employment.
The election has passed and the Government started saying that the Shipyard
cannot continue going as it is and that the time has come for the privatization
of the Shipyard, that this shall mean that around a thousand workers, from the
1,700 present workers are not going to remain employed but that they are going
to be asked to retire from work.
The Shipyard workers had a fright.
They
thought that this storm was the effect of bad management that is presently
managing the Shipyard, a management that cost the Shipyard a loss of 88 million
ewros on one ship only, the FAIRMOUNT.
The Government did not say so.
It did not want to point fingers at anyone!
It did not want to hold a public inquiry.
It
only said that in a few months the subsidies shall terminate, because this is
what the EU ordered and that it will pass on to the only way left to it –
privatization.
What happened after the news?
Everyone showed himself to be in favour.
The party in Government, the party in Opposition, trade unions, constituted bodies, opinionists in their majority.
Everyone
agreed with the idea, not everyone with the conditions or the manner in which it
was to be done.
God forbid if you speak against privatization! God forbid if you blaspheme with
privatization!
This
is not true
And
as happened in the case of the EU Idol, this Shipyard privatization may also be
a false hope for hundreds of workers and their families.
Proof of this there is a country that no one can say that it is backwards in the
political and social sectors.
I
am referring to New Zealand or as it is called by the Maoris, Reteroa.
New Zealand was a pioneer in many sectors.
It was the first country that in 1893 gave the right to vote to women.
In the Thirties it started the welfare state social services.
In
the Eighties it was the first state that declared itself free from nuclear arms.
During the same Eighties, the Social Government got obsessed with free market
and privatized many sectors.
This Privatization wave brought many consequences: social and economic failure,
stagnation, unemployment, financial failure, criminality and unequal
development.
Twenty
years after, another Social Democratic government was elected and it turned
again the clock forwards.
Last month the Clark Government took back in its hands the state trains and launches, that were privatized in the Nineties.
The public company was called Kiwi Rail and on the day it was established, the Finance Minister, Michael Cullen, said that privatization was “a lesson that hurt New Zealand”.
This
same Clark government ended the privatization of Air New Zealand and
successfully set up a public bank called Kiwi Bank.
These anti-privatization measures are showing what can be done in different
sectors of the economy as a modern, environmentally sustainable alternative and
at the same time assuring the living of many workers and their families.
Cannot the leaders of the political parties, trade unions, Maltese constituted
bodies go to New Zealand and see with their own eyes that there is a better way
than that of privatization?
This is what progressive common sense demands!
The neo-liberal experience of these last ten years is being a great disappointment to many people who think about the future of the economy and of the workers.
I
could have mentioned the initiatives of Chavez in Venezuela, but I knew that for
some Chavez is an anti-American fanatic and pro Cuba’s Castro.
Certainly no one can say so about the modern New Zealand government led by Mrs
Clark!
