The agreement of Malta’s membership in the European Union is going to bring great social trouble in our country.

Today we are assisting for the obscenity that the Government has made to the Shipyard workers.

Tomorrow it is going to make another obscenity with the port workers.

Then it will turn on the Public Broadcasting (PBS) workers.

Following will be the turn of the Air Malta workers and we continue like this as long as we allow the European Union to impose it anti-social policy upon us.

In the meantime the Government is arming the police to guard against revolts.

This week we saw scenes of number of policemen ready for trouble guarding Castille, guarding The Times printing press and guarding the Courts.

We saw hundreds of tradesmen, heads of families, angry at the Government and at Fenech Adami, Gonzi and Dalli, in the Valletta streets, instead of on their work working to increase our country’s wealth.

Our government – a squanderer and without a social conscience, weakened with great scandals – instead of first planning how to utilize the trades of the workers who are not going to remain in the work of ship repair and shipbuilding, is happy to pay them without doing anything except worrying what is going to happen to them and unhappy because they do not know where and with whom they are going to work.

At the same time the Prime Minister and the Ministers appear as if nothing is happening, boasting how well we are going to be with EU membership, and in the most servile manner implement the regulations and the Union impositions notwithstanding that they are anti-social and of great harm to our country.

The CNI condemns this anti-national behaviour of the Maltese Government.

It condemns the European Union anti-social policy. It repudiates the membership agreement that the Government made with the European Union.

It promises total solidarity with the Maltese workers who are suffering all great humiliation.

It supports all the efforts that the GWU is making to safeguard the workers interests hit by the implementation of the EU policy.

It appeals to all the Maltese workers to unite in one union so that it will be able to defend their interests and rights.

Instead of a spring that Fenech Adami insulted us with, a harsh winter is coming for the Maltese workers.

First we are going to have the Budget tempest.

Then after the European Parliament elections pass in next June,

* we will have other tempests about

* the pensions,

* the health care,

* the social services,

* and other lightning,

all the fruit of our European Union membership.

The Torch of Freedom shall not be extinguished

After the Labour Party General Conference decided what the party policy should be on the European Union, we know a bit better what forces there are in Malta today that are not going to be swayed with all that the EU decides for its member countries.

In this field there is a political party, the Labour Party, and two non-governmental organizations,

the Front Maltese Arise FMI

and the Campaign for National Independence (CNI).

The Labour Party bound itself with its delegates to work unceasingly to see that the agreement with the EU will not be disadvantageous and harmful to the Maltese people especially for the workers.

The Front Maltin Inqumu (FMI) stated that the agreement that the Nationalist Government made with the EU should be changed with an agreement that observes the Constitution of Malta, does not thread on the policy of neutrality and in favour of working for peace, that allows Malta to be free in the economic sector to increase work and employment and make commercial agreements with any country that is ready to help our country.

The CNI (Campaign for National Independence) is the third organization in Mata that is not ready to betray the Maltese people.

That is why the CNI is insisting that once the membership agreement that the Nationalist Government made with the EU is very harmful to the Maltese people.

This agreement must not be the basis of our country’s relations with the EU.

The CNIalso believes that it must continue to fight for the Maltese people to endear their Independence and Freedom and their sovereignty that are seriously threatened with the EU membership agreement.

The anti-nationalist camp

Today we are seeing that the Nationalist Government

* hid from the Maltese people

* what is the real state in the financial sector,

* in the social services sector,

* in the health sector,

* in the industrial

* and employment sectors,

* and of other sectors.

Now the Government is telling us that the state of none of these sectors is sustainable.

Prior to the election, Fenech Adami and his henchmen, surrounded by the group of 31 out of tune voices, had intoned praise and happiness how we were doing well in all these sectors, and how we will be better in them when we join the European Union.

In the other camp that is ready to sacrifice everything for what the European Union wants, there is the Nationalist Party in Government, the Alternative Party, and the 31 organizations and alliances that formed the celebrity choir that accompanied the Nationalist Government in its deceit that it deceived the small majority of Maltese and Gozitans in the last election.

But the conditions of the EU membership agreement, instead of helping us in all the mentioned sectors, are going to be of great harm to us, because the Union policy in those sectors is not suitable for us and is not suitable for our circumstances, for a country smaller than a city in the other Union member countries.

The greatest trouble that we have with the Union membership agreement is that we are not free to implement in every sector the policy that the Maltese people choose in every general election, but we have like slaves to submit to that policy that the European Union decides for every member country in the Union.

The
CNI does not want the flame of Independence and the torch of Freedom to be extinguished in Malta.

That is why the CNI is going to continue working earnestly so that Maltese youths shall again understand that Independence and freedom are the dearest things that a people can have.

The CNIwants to explain to the Maltese youths that they must be the ones who plan the future of our country and not for their future to be planned by the majority of the foreign people of the other European Union countries.

For the people of Europe to work together there’s no need to lose our freedom.

The lack of freedom shall in a very short time be the cause that the people cramped together in one union revolt and again demand their freedom.

In a short time, it shall again happen what happened in the Soviet Union when the republics that formed the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), fought to get their independence.

It shall happen as happened in Czechoslovakia, when Slovakia took its independence from the Czech Republic.

It shall happen as happened in Yugoslavia, when Slovenia, Croatia, Herzegovina and Bosnia fought for their freedom from Serbia and Montenegro.

This is the lesson of history.

The same shall happen in a non-natural union of the European Union countries.

Malta shall again be Independent and Free unless the flame of Independence and the torch of Freedom are extinguished out in the hearts and minds of our people.

Increased unemployment with EU membership

The atrociousness of the European Union policy is being felt in all its cruelty in the measures that the Government has taken on the order of the Union against our Shipyards workers.

Whoever carefully examines Annex 11 of the Membership Treaty that Fenech Adami signed on 16 April in Athens, and which Alfred Sant had not signed, finds that the European Union is crazy, and Fenech Adami accepted, how much work can be made in the Maltese Shipyards and what is the number of productive workers that can continue to work in the Shipyards.

The European Union used the guillotine with the Maltese Shipyards workers because there is “excess capacity” in the Union shipyards, that is, the amount of work that the Shipyards are able to do, is greater than the amount of work for ship repair and shipbuilding that there is today.

Therefore, the European Union decided that the Malta Shipyards cannot exceed an amount of work of more than two million man-hours every year.

Disastrous policy

For Malta, this European Union policy is a great disaster.

The main and eternal problem of our country is that of lack of work for the number of workers that we have.

In the past we mitigated this problem by thousands of workers having to emigrate.

After our country took its future in its own hands, we built industries so that our workers can remain working in Malta.

To do this, we gave aid and incentives to the entrepreneurs to create work and opportunities of thousands of jobs.

Now according to the agreement that bound us with the European Union, we cannot continue with this policy with which we created work and employment in our country.

The European Union, with the agreement that Fenech Adami signed on 16 April in Athens, and which the Labour Opposition voted against its ratification in Parliament, took away our right to continue giving aid and incentives to industry, on the pretext of the principles of free competition.

This European Union policy is a very great obstacle for the establishment of new enterprises in our country, and also for the continuing of some of the enterprises that we have operating presently in our country.

The new investment that we could attract to our country with the aid and incentives that we used to give is now going to go to neighboring countries that are not bound with the European Union policy.

Some enterprises that we now have, when they lose the aid that they had, will seek elsewhere where they can get aid.

This is all a loss of work and employment for us, because of the agreement that Fenech Adami bound us with the European Union.

More work not less

The solution that the European Union imposed upon the Maltese Government for the problem of the losses that the Shipyards incur every year is a very bad solution for Malta.

We need to bring more work for our country to employ more workers and to get more foreign currencies that we so much need to be able to buy our needs from overseas.

Instead of trying to bring more work for our Shipyards, the European Union forced us to accept a limit on the amount of ship repair and shipbuilding work that we can make every year.

In the employment sector, the European Union is built on bad social principles with which we do not agree.

For the European Union, in the manufacturing and industries services sectors, the market rules are above all and absolute and competition is another commandment and cannot be hindered.

Not only this, but, in the agricultural sector the free market and competition rules do not exist.

Because of its mistaken policy, the European Union forces its member countries to pay great millions for workers to leave their employment where the enterprises are making losses, instead of giving those enterprises the same amount of money to ebb le to continue giving work and employment to their workers.

That is why there are so many millions of unemployed workers in the European Union countries.

This mistaken and anti-social policy, is being imposed by the European Union on Malta and the Fenech Adami Government is happy to increase debt by paying millions to leave hundreds of Shipyard workers to leave their employment.

Instead of creating more work, it is creating more unemployment on the basis of the European Union membership agreement.
