The Lisbon Treaty makes th EU a military alliance – KMB
The
Chairman of the Campaign for National Independence (CNI)
Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici is of the opinion that the Lisbon Treaty makes the EU a
military alliance and this is against the Constitution of Malta because it
clearly states that Malta cannot participate in a military alliance.
While addressing the media on the neutrality clause in the Constitution of
Malta, the ex-Prime Minister of Malta said that the Lisbon Treaty states that if
a member country is attacked the other member countries have to help it with all
possible means.
This means that every EU member country is obliged to militarily defend every other member.
And once the article renders the EU into a military alliance this is not compatible with the Constitution of Malta because this states that our country is
“a
neutral state that actively seeks to ensure peace, security and social progress
among all nations by embracing a policy of non-alignment and refuses to
participate in any military alliance”.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici reminded that this article in the Constitution of Malta goes
back to February 1987 when in the Maltese Parliament 64 out of the 65
parliamentary members voted in its favour.
Today
there are some who are mentioning the circumstances have changed even though no
one is saying that Malta should not remain neutral as much as no one has the
courage to say that we have to change the Constitution of Malta to be compatible
with the European Union.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici insisted that prior to the Malta’s EU membership referendum
the Government had promised that there is nothing in the EU which breaches the
Constitution of Malta but we are now seeing how Malta’s neutrality is
incompatible with membership in the EU.
While he mentioned that until one superpower remains, the United States, we cannot align ourselves with anyone and insisted that non-alignment is more proper now, the Labour ex-Leader remarked that Russia, which controls half the energy in Europe, is rearming itself and is a superpower.
There
is also China which, if it continues going as it presently is, is going to be
the strongest superpower in the world.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said that NATO and the EU are being increasingly militarized
against someone that are certainly flies or butterflies, and insisted that from
a situation of a Cold War today we have a situation where there are different
zones in conflict such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East as well as the
threat of terrorism.
He continued to say that is we remove the reference to non-alignment from the
Constitution of Malta there would be no obstacle for Malta to become a NAT
member.
In this case we have already taken the first step with membership in the Partnership for Peace.
While he said that there is no reason why the neutrality clause should be changed and insisted that if this happens this should be to strengthen the clause to be more restrictive, Dr Mifsud Bonnici insisted that Malta should work in favour of international disarmament.
