Last
week the European Union gave another proof that it does not respect democracy,
although it likes to preach it.
Because when the Greek Prime Minister proposed to let the Greek people decide
in a referendum whether to accept the bailout package and the austerity measures
agreed by
him
with the European Union, particularly the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and
Napoleon Sarkozy of France, objected that the Greek people exercise their
democratic right on the bailout and austerity measures plan.
The Union leaders, Merkel and Sarkozy told the Greeks that if they do not accept the agreed bailout and austerity measures plan, they will not give any more help to Greece.
Due to this ultimatum, all the Government party deputies in the Greek parliament voted in favour of the bailout and austerity measures plan, notwithstanding that they know that the vast majority of the Greeks are against them.
This fact shows that the democratic parliamentary system no longer respects the
will of the popular majority, and instead of a parliamentary democracy we have a
parliamentary dictatorship that suffocates popular democracy.
Anti-democratic Union
The
European Union opposition for the referendum in Greece was not an isolated
occasion, because following contrary polls in the French and Dutch referenda on
the European Constitutional Treaty, the Union leaders decided not to allow
further referenda in the member countries because of the danger that popular
votes will be against what the Union would want.
That is why when the Union prepared the Lisbon Treaty instead of the European Constitutional Treaty, the Union leaders insisted that it shall be the national parliaments that were to be asked to ratify the Treaty, without it being submitted to popular approval.
In
this anti-democratic manner the European Union wants that what it decides is to
happen always happen, even when the majority of the citizens of the member
countries are against it.
This happens because the system of parliamentary representation permits the parliamentary representatives to act against the will of the majority of the voters that had elected them in a general election.
Thus the parliamentary system is a denial of the system of popular democracy, and the European Union is encouraging the denial of the system of popular democracy, and the European Union is encouraging the denial of the basic principle of democracy and sustaining a dictatorship by imposing its decisions on the citizens of the member countries.
A wave against the EU
The
political leaders of the EU countries are not accepting that referenda be held
about the European Union because they know that there is a popular wave against
it.
The
latest example was given by the United Kingdom Prime Minister, where
notwithstanding that public opinion polls shows that the majority of the United
Kingdom people want a referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain in
the European Union, the British Government opposed a parliamentary motion in
favour of a referendum, although about 100 deputies of the Government party
voted in its favour, against the will of the Prime Minister Cameron.
The European Union and member countries leaders know that the majority of the people of the member countries are not interested in the European Union, so much so that less than half the voters vote in the European Parliament members elections.

This is because the majority of the people feel that the Union is for the politicians and not for the people.
As much as the European Union does not have faith in the people of the member countries, just the same the people do not have faith in the European Union.
Also
in our country this wave against the European Union is constantly increasing.
Opinion makers who were always
in
favour of Malta’s membership in the European Union are now openly criticizing it
with their writings in the press.
Many who believed that the euro currency was going to benefit our country are
now realizing that the euro is a millstone that is weighing down the progress of
our country and is burdening us with great burdens that we are not able to bear
with loans and guarantees to Euro Zone countries that are in financial
difficulties.
It seems that if the Maltese Government had to call a referendum on whether we
remain members in the EU, or whether we conclude a partnership agreement with
it, the majority of Maltese and Gozitans would choose to vote to leave the EU
and conclude a new partnership agreement with it, without being burdened with
all the burdens of the European Union.
