For the banks not to go bankrupt, the governments of the EU countries advanced them billions of euros.

The greatest example is that of Germany, where the Government spent €98 billion to help the banks and financial institutions.

In many cases, the governments had to incur debt to help the banks.

Now, with all this debt that the governments contracted, are going to lead to the breakup of the euro and not for this to happen, are reducing employment and crushing the lower class people with austerity measures.

This is the ugly story of a vicious circle of deceit and exploitation that is being prepared in the EU.

Because one should ask, to whom were the billions that the banks lent in the first place from the deposits made to from the deposits made to them by the people?

Once the banks were in danger to going bankrupt, it’s certain that they were not able to collect the money that they had lent.

The billions that the banks had lent and were not collected back ended up with the businessmen of the international financial markets to whom the governments go to incur debt to be able to save the banks and thus not let the people lose their deposits that they had made with the banks.

Now the governments,

* with the austerity measures,

* want the people to pay

* for the debt that the governments had made

* for the peoples money not to be lost,

* by the same people paying more taxes,

* such as an increase in VAT,

* accept reductions in wages,

* in pensions and

* social benefits.

So that the people would not have lost the deposits that they had in the banks,

* they are going to pay the Government

* with an increase in taxes

* and with reductions in wages,

* pensions and

* social benefits,

* so that the Government could pay back the debt that it incurred

* to save the banks and the peoples deposits.

This is the vicious circle of deceit and exploitation of the people that is happening in the EU.

For the euro not to break up

The EU is encouraging the governments of the member countries to implement a policy of austerity because of the great debt that the governments incurred for the euro not to breakup, as admitted by the German Chancellor herself, Angela Merkel.

In practice a policy of austerity for the EU means less income for the workers and the small fry, the dismantling piece by piece of the social state and increase in unemployment.

With these measures the people lose a lot from what they had acquired along the years, before becoming an EU member and shall find themselves back in the dire social situation that they were in years ago.

The EU is insisting that the governments of the member countries reduce their yearly deficit, as well as the amount of national debt that hey have.

Up to the year 2013 the deficit must not be more than 3% of all the wealth that the country produces in a year (Gross Domestic Product).

For the deficit not to be more than 3% of GDP, it is estimated that the Euro Zone countries and the United Kingdom shall have to reduce their deficit together, with a total of around €400 billion.

The United Kingdom has to reduce the deficit by $100 billion,

* Portugal by €2 billion,

* Greece by €30 billion,

* France has to reduce the deficit to 4% of GDP and

* Germany has to reduce it by €60 billion up to the year 2016.

The EU is also proposing that the retirement age be increased to 70 years.

Damage to the economies

The EU policy

* in the financial,

* economic,

* industrial and

* social sectors

* causes total destruction of the economies

* and the social situation of the people of the member countries

* and particularly of the Euro Zone.

As an effect of the policy implemented by the EU,

* national debt in every member country has reached sky high,

* the deficits increased every year,

* production activity decreased,

* unemployment increased,

* poverty spread and the social state is being dismantled bit by bit

* and the masses suffered a decrease in their standard of living,

* enterprises closed in the EU countries

* to open in other countries outside the EU,

* especially in the Far East countries.

Instead of the EU reaching the United States of America and Japan, these are leaving it behind more and more because they are growing at a faster rate than that with which the EU is growing.

This is while China, India and Brazil are growing at an even bigger rate even in recession.

First with the financial crisis,

* then with the economic recession

* and afterwards with the burden of the great national debts

* and now with the danger of some EU countries going bankrupt

* and with the threat of the collapse of the euro,

* the EU has weakened immensely.

The great social unrest that is rising in many EU countries accuses its non-sustainable policy.

We will do well if our country throws away forthwith this policy dictated by the EU, always if our people do not want to continue drowning with the EU.

Our country had to contract loans

* €66 million to pay them to the EU this year,

* €74 million to help Greece

* and between €350 and €400 million

* to be given as aid to the other EU countries that will be in crisis.

If we leave the EU, we shall be free from these burdens.

Otto von Bismarck: with blood and steel

By By Charles Micallef,  Campaign for National Independence CNI

This issue that the EU is encouraging and ordering the Euro Zone countries to destroy as much as they can the social state, while it does not want a reduction in the military expense of every country, reminds me that the EU still embraces the Prussian thought of Otto von Bismarck (1815 – 1898), that was “Mit Blut und Eisen” – With Blood and steel – a clear reference to the German militarism and the wars in Europe.

Today the armies of the European countries no longer fight against each other as previously.

In the Middle Ages, France and the United Kingdom once fought a hundred years war.

It’s good that these wars no longer happen, because with them thousands of people were destroyed while the owners of armaments factories got richer, such as Krup and not the working class.

But this issue that the EU wants

* to reduce wages,

* social benefits,

* pensions,

* free health services…

* Shows that it is more concerned in shedding blood and steel in munitions in the Iraq and Afghan wars, rather than the welfare of the working class.

I noticed that when the EU said that it wants workers wages to be reduced, I did not hear it say that it also wanted a reduction in the salaries of Prime Ministers, Ministers and Presidents.

Neither did I hear it criticizing the rampant corruption that could be cut with a knife and tax evasion by the big fish.

It is not the workers and the small fry who implement corruption and evade taxes.

It is the rich that do so and bankrupt the country.

It appears that the EU does not have the working class close to its heart.

It appears to be more of the unbridled capitalists who believe that the market should be free to control itself without anyone interfering with it.

I think that it is fitting and the time has arrived where the page is turned over in favour of the European workers and where the private sector does not create employment for the unemployed workers.

The State should intervene itself for those who are unemployed and can work.

If everyone is working, everyone will pay the National Insurance contribution and Income Tax and the deficit will be reduced quicker.

Now that we have the euro crisis and it is the working class that is going to pay more for it.

About the euro, I think that the EU has made a botch up due to the haste that the EU leaders had to see that the UE has a common currency.

What did they not do?

They did not allow it a trial period before adopting it.

You do not just operate a new ship without trying it.

The same applies in the case of great work on a ship in the Dockyard.

When a ship was ready, we used to take it out for trials, not in the calm port sea but in stormy seas, to see if any defect shows up or shortcoming when it faces the strength of the storm waves.

In the case of the euro currency, they did not do so.

They did not test it in the storm of the financial markets and the slamming of the speculators.

Now the euro is showing its defects and the German Chancellor has even said that if the euro fails, the European Union project will fail.

If the euro had been passed through the trials of financial storms, it would not have been said that it could fail.

Here I remind you again of Bismarck’s words : “Mit Blud und Eisen” that the EU appears to be adopting.

But I hope that the workers in the EU will not have to shed their blood (blut) to protect their lives and interests and not to have reason to take up arms of steel (eisen) to defend themselves.

The working class

But I ask, what importance does the EU give to the protection and interests of the workers?

It appears that it does not give them too much importance.

In fact, Pascal Fontaine, in his book on the Schumann Declaration and Europe along the years 1950-2000, with the Title “A new idea for Europe” reveals how the EU does not have the wish to protect the interests and lives of the workers class.

Because he writes, about 21st century Europe, there are three main points:

* the process of EU enlargement, which he calls an investment in peace;

* the reform in the EU institutions for the EU to be strong and democratic,

* and the political union to protect and give social security to the European workers.

But only security in the military sector is mentioned.

It’s good to have security in our countries and seas, but security is not being strengthened by the EU with the invasion of thousands of illegal immigrants.

Even in the peace sector there was no good investment with military violence that was committed by NATO with the EU’s blessing, in Serbia.

The Maastricht Treaty, the Nice and Lisbon treaties ignored the workers class, as if it does not exist and only the industrialists class exists (previously were called capitalists).

It’s wrong to ignore the workers class and not protect their livlyhood, interests and social security.

It may happen that if the European working class feels that it is put aside, burdened and exploited by the capitalist class, it takes to the streets to show its anger.

And the EU ends up an arena of violent confrontations between the workers and the governments of the EU countries.

The best and only way the PL has

By Joseph M Cachia, Campaign for National Independence CNI

The best and only way that the Labour Party has is to go back to its Left roots.

If the Labour Party really want to be back in Government it should as soon as possible change the way that it has embarked upon and embrace a policy if social justice that is only found in Leftist policy.

There is a need that the Labour Party starts on the road of a crusade of moral justice.

It is damaging for everyone if the peoples pulse is not felt and the call for justice not to be heard by he who pretends to lead our country in the coming years.

It is a pity that we let ourselves arguing on petty and valueless details that instead of helping the people understand the grave and dire situation that we are in, only serve to deviate from the realities around us.

It will be a great mistake if the Labour party tries to hide or put aside its Socialist principles and ambitions that it inherited to try to please everyone, those on top and those below.

It is true that we should continue renewing ourselves for today’s times because thus we will reach a wider audience of people of good will but we have to promise and swear that we shall not accept any compromise where our principles are concerned and that our Socialist foundations will always remain the foundations of our party.

The Malta Labour Party is not some new movement.

This is a great party, embraced by half of Malta and built on strong foundations of principles and social justice.

This party was always a Socialist party and it will be useless to play around with names so as to appear to be some new movement created lately by some individual.

The same is a waste of time and division playing around for a change of the Party emblem.

What is wrong with our emblem?

These tactics lead to the destruction and loss of faith of the people and many times leave grave doubts about what there is different from other parties.

In this situation even the existence of the party may be in danger.

The Malta Labour Party merits much more faith and merit that its opponent party, the Nationalist, which unfortunately is neither worthy to be so called after selling our small nation, our land and the leadership of our country to the foreigner.

It is this that needs to change its name not us !!

The Malta Labour Party is capable of addressing and rise up to the modern challenges by working, supporting and creating a balance of more just work in the society that we are living in.

It should also have the ability and strength to assure economic wealth that the country can create be distributed with justice and morality and in the case of need of some sacrifices, these should be shouldered more by those who grabbed more and are stronger.

The Malta Labour Party, since its inception, was always composed of people with a sense of social justice and who conducted a great moral crusade for the establishment of a just society and was never afraid or hid its beliefs.

There is a need to be honest first of all with ourselves and not be afraid to state our principles.

This is the spirit that should lead us.

It is our duty that we should be stronger in our beliefs and take more concrete actions.

We must not look negatively and see the glass half empty but if we are positive we may be able to see it half full.

I do not wish to be interpreted as some pessimist critic and not offer my moderate contribution for the future wellbeing of mu party.

Therefore, with all honesty and without any pretensions, I wish to present some specific points that I hope will be taken into consideration for the Malta Labour Party management.

These have to do with:

* less formality and more flexibility;

* studying and more and better treatment of values and principles than administrative procedures

* and more upwards rather than downward traffic.

We have to find seriousness in the maintaining of our Socialist beliefs and the sacrosanct principle of the elimination of any exploitation of the people.

It is only in this way that we may persuade the people of the truthfulness and integrity of our principles and win every trust and respect.

This is what the people shall judge us upon in another election!
