With the aim of making propaganda in favour of the EU, this month they are preaching and showering praise on the Treaty of Rome that was signed 50 years ago by six European countries that set up the European Economic Community that developed in today’s European Union.

None of the speakers and writers said that today’s Union is totally different and far apart from the Community that was set up 50 years ago.

To have an idea of how today’s European Union is not like the European Economic Community set up 50 years ago, it is enough to mention a few facts.

While the first three founders of the Community, Robert Schuman of France, Konrad Adeneur of Germany and Alcide De Gasperi of Italy, had a Christian vision for the union they set up, today’s European Union Parliament did not accept Professor Rocco Buttiglione as a Commissioner, principally because he had publicly stated his Christian beliefs.

When the European Union Constitution was drafted, they did not accept that it states that Europe has Christian roots.

And we remind you of another fact that shows how today’s Union does not have the Christian roots of the Community founders of 50 years ago.

Today the Union officially promotes a policy in favour of abortion and threatens not to give aid to poor countries that do not permit abortion in the fight against poverty.

It’s right to insist that when our country pays its contribution every year to the European Union, the Maltese people will be helping and approving the wrong policy and action of the Union that Christians who are not only skin-deep Christians should not help and approve.

And in the celebrations and functions, also religious, that are going to be held on the 50 anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, they will not be praising the Christian values of the European Economic Community of 50 years ago, but the values and the wrong policies of today’s European Union.

In the preaching about the European Union will be said things that are not correct, to leave a favourable impact on the people.

In the first instance, the Union propagandists boast that there were no wars during the last 50 years in Europe because of the European Union.

But this is not correct, because while the primary aim of the establishment of the European Economic Community, (as was previously that of the European Coal and Steel Community) was to ensure peace between France and Germany, contemporary history researchers agree that peace was maintained in Europe due to other factors.

There was the factor that thousands of American troops have been stationed in Germany and other Western European countries, as well as the establishment of the CSCE (Conference on the Security and Cooperation in Europe) that Malta’s name remained connected with it because of the work of Prime Minister Mintoff to lead great powers like the United States of America and the Soviet Union to agree that there can be no security in Europe if there is no peace in the Mediterranean.

The European Union propagandists also boast that the Union ensured the principles of democracy and fundamental human rights.

Although it is true that the Union acknowledges these principles and insists that they be observed in the member countries, it is not correct that these principles were introduced on the insistence of the European Union.

Because years before the European Economic Community was set up 50 years ago, the Council of Europe was set up by European countries, including Malta which was one of the first of all the European countries to become a member.

The principal aims of the Council of Europe that has its centre in Strasbourg, where the European Union Parliament used to meet before the Union built a new Parliament near the European Council, are the protection of Democracy and the Fundamental Human Rights.

The European Union ended up by also stealing the flag of the Council of Europe, which is a flag with a blue background and a circle of 12 stars, apart from snatching and grabbing many of the other work that was made by the Council of Europe.

In the European Union 50 anniversary celebrations, it will be good to remember that much of the boasting about Union acquisitions, such as peace, democracy and fundamental human rights, are not acquisitions of the Union, and whoever presents them as European Union acquisitions will be deceiving the people.

The European Union propagandists say that the Smart City project is going to be made in Malta because our country is a member in the European Union.

But this is not so.

In the CNI Smash TV programme of 25 January this year, we asked a number of questions to Minister Austin Gatt about the Rikażli project, Smart City.

We had told him that if he had nothing to hide, he should answer them before the Local Councils elections of 10 March.

By the time we had prepared this page, neither the Minister nor anyone from among the officers in his ministry has uttered or written one word to put our minds at rest that it is not true the Smart City project is more property speculation than an “Information Technology City”.

Our questions were about these points.

Many are therefore saying that the figure of 5,000 jobs may be fictitious because if they do not meet this figure, all they have to pay as a fine is the sum of Lm260,000.

Others are asking if it is true that many of the jobs may be part-time and not full-time.

There are some who are insisting that there is no guarantee that the number of workers will not be reduced after the project starts operating.

It appears that what we had said was true, that is, that foreign workers from the European Union will have the same right for employment as much as the Maltese workers because in the Union we cannot discriminate against workers from the Union.

Everything indicates that the Tecom Investments company would not have come to our country had the Government not given them all the Rikażli land, and this even though Malta was in the European Union just the same.

Therefore they did not come because we are members in the Union.

The Honorable Ministers’ silence confirms what we had asked and which he did not give us an answer to.

During a CNI commentary on Smash TV on Thursday, 1 March, we mentioned some tricks that certain unscrupulous traders can do to take advantage of the adoption of the Ewro by our country.

One of the tricks that we mentioned – and warned about – was that the prices will start to be increased little by little so that by 1 July this year when prices will have to be shown in the Maltese Lira and also in the Ewro, they will have no need to tamper with the exchange rate – and thus break the law – because they would have made the tampering before.

In the newspaper It-Torċa of 25 February, there was a short but very important report.

Since it was a very short report, the Torċa readers may have easily missed it.

It is therefore good to repeat what was in that report, because it confirms how right we were to warn Smash TV viewers about some tricks that may be used by certain traders.

We make it clear that this does not mean that every trader is doing so.

On the contrary we believe that the vast majority of traders are not going to do so.

But one should be on his guard for those who will take every opportunity to skin their fellow-creatures, because their craving for profit exceeds all sense of honesty and fair-trading.

 
The Torċa published a table of three products and how their prices had increased between August 2006 and February 2007.

We are reproducing the table hereunder.

Is there anybody who believes that these increases were made fortuitously and not so that when we also have the prices in Ewro it will appear that there were no increases and with the Government appearing that it was right, that is, that with the Ewro “only the currency will change and not the prices?”

We again appeal to our readers to take note of the prices that are increasing and inform the CNI Secretary, 60A, Triq id-Dejqa, Valletta, by sending a note at this address.

We will show them, both on this page as well as in the commentary that we make in the CNI programme every Thursday, at 6.30 p.m., with a repetition on Sunday at 7.30 p.m.

The vileness is also that of the Government itself when it passed the law that make believe that it protects the consumers by summoning those who do not adhere to the official exchange rate and fine them.

But the Government itself gave power to the responsible minister that he can waive the fine of that trader who had robbed you!

But the Government did not do anything in the law to prohibit even scandalous price increases.

As appears in this table that was published in It-Torċa, the increases are being made PRIOR to the entry into effect of the requirement of showing the prices in the two currencies.

In fact, in all that propaganda that NECC (the Committee on the adoption of the Ewro) is making, nowhere is it stated that the prices cannot be increased.

They only say that the rate of exchange for six months (during which the prices will be in the two currencies) has to be the official rate.

Then from 1 January 2008, God only knows what will happen!

Once again, Derek Bennett, who from England always shows genuine interest in Malta, made a fitting comment in an English newspaper last Monday.

He wrote that when you consider that many countries became members in the last few years, you become aware how the slogan chosen for the 50 anniversary of the establishment of the European Economic Community “Together since 1957” is another false joke of the Union propagandists.

In the case of Malta, membership in the Union began in 2004, while Romania and Bulgaria have just become members at the beginning of this year.

Bennet referred to the report that appeared in the beginning of February that said that the Maltese people are mostly worried by inflation, and noted that during the same week Malta applied to introduce the Ewro.

He commented that in every country that had adopted the Ewro, there was a big rise in inflation.

He said that thus Malta is going to have little to celebrate next year when with the adoption of the Ewro, it is going to lose the economic freedom and suffer an increase in the cost of living.

Because of this, Derek Bennet suggested that it is fitting that the slogan should be

“Together in Inflation”
