WE SWEAR TO FREE MALTA FROM THE SLAVERY, COLONIALISM AND DICTATORIAL ILLEGAL EUROPEAN UNION RULE

TELL YOUR PARLIAMENTARY DEPUTY THAT YOU WANT MALTA TO REGAIN INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM

In the seven years 2007 – 2013 the Maltese and Gozitans are going to pay €420,000,000 to the European Union

After 2008 the Shipyard can continue to be given financial aid by the Government  – Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi

During a press conference held today Monday 6 August 2007, Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi, chairman of the Campaign for National Independence CNI, brought attention to various point on how membership in the European Union is causing great harm to Malta.

Subsidies

Dr  Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi said that the Maltese Government had paid:

* Lm750,000 in subsidies in a few months to Ryan Air.

* Air Malta was paid Lm500,000 in subsidies.

* In the first six months of this year, farmers, herdsmen and fishermen were paid a total of Lm4.8 million.

* With these we also have to include the subsidies to the public transport.

He said that these are only part of the subsidies that the country is paying.

The Shipyard

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi continued to say that the Government is also paying millions in subsidies to the Shipyard, with the Government saying that it is not going to be in a position to keep the Shipyard after 2008 if it continues to make a loss, because of the agreement between the Government and the European Union.

What the European Union imposed

When he spoke about the Shipyard case, Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi said that:

“The European Union imposed an agreement on the Shipyards, which agreement:

* restricts the amount of work,

* imposes a limit on the number of workers and,
* imposes a limit on the volume of work that it can do.

* The European Union also imposed that after 2008, the Government cannot give subsidies to the Shipyard.”

The Shipyard is the University for trades

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi said that:

* The Shipyard is the University for trades.

* Today we are forking out money to keep the academic university at Tal-Qroqq.

* The Shipyard is important for those who want to continue with trades.
* The Shipyard is necessary for these people.

* The Shipyard is also important because it brings foreign currency to our country.

The Shipyard can continue to be granted aid

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi continued to say that “according to the agreement which had been made, the Shipyard was declared as a commercial company, and therefore it was decided that it cannot be granted any more subsidies after 2008.

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi said that notwithstanding what is being said, the Government can, just the same, continue to financially aid and subsidize the Shipyard to continue to operate after 2008 as it is doing in other sectors.

This can continue to be done by not continuing to classify the Shipyard as a commercial company, but as a Government Department.

Thus the Government can continue to help the same Shipyard financially.

The membership expenses are much greater than the income

The Chairman of the Campaign for National Independence CNI, Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi, challenged the Government not to continue to evade from answering and give details about how much the European Union is costing Malta, both in expenses as well as direct payments that are being made.

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi declared that everything indicates that the expenses which are being incurred by the country in connection with the European Union and direct payments that are being made are much more than the money which Malta is receiving from the European Union itself.

He challenged the Government to prove that this is not happening.

Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici insisted that, “no one knows exactly how much the European Union is costing Malta.

From the European Union budget allocated to Malta it results that we will receive Lm51 million each year.

But from the deficits that are always shown in the budget, the Maltese Government declares that we will pay Lm22 million each year directly to the European Union.

With these have to be added the Central Bank's profit of Lm12 million that are going to be lost because they will start going to the European Central Bank.

We also have to add the millions in subsidies that are being paid by the Maltese Government, and therefore from the people's taxes.

There was the case of two companies who had to receive funds from the European Union, but because of some procedures these funds will probably be lost and will have to be paid by the Maltese Government.

These amount to Lm300,000.

With these we have to mention the 50 persons that are employed at the Maltese Embassy in Brussels and the other jobs in Ministries connected with the European Union.

We also mention the 4,000 workers that came to work in Malta from European Union countries and who are taking the work from Maltese workers.”

Illegal Immigrants

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi also mentioned the problem of illegal immigration.

He said that, “from information that is being given, it results that there are 5,000 illegal immigrants in Malta, that are costing the country thousands of Liri every day.

This means that in a year, the expenses connected with illegal immigration are Lm23 million.

In view of these expenses, together with the expenses to operate the Schengen Treaty, it clearly appears that the country has more expenses than the income that it is getting from the European Union”.

Malta pays more than it receives

Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi said that the Campaign for National Independence has made its calculations and it resulted clearly to it that Malta is paying more (direct and other expenses), than it  is receiving from the European Union.

He challenged the Government to speak out and give a clear picture to the people about the cost of the European Union for Malta.

The Reform Treaty

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi also spoke about the Reform Treaty that was made to replace the European Constitution and said that what was found in the European Constitution is written down in this treaty.

He said that after the Constitutional Treaty was not approved in France and the Netherlands, a number of consultations were held in the member countries.

He also said that now that this period had passed everyone was waiting for the conclusions of this consultation period.

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi emphasized that the reform treaty that was presented does not represent the opinions of the popular meetings that were held about the Constitutional treaty.

He also said that it clearly appears that the consultation period was just a waste of time and money.

Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonniċi described the reform treaty as a deceit of the people because of the impression that is being given that this treaty is different from the Constitutional Treaty.
