Set up of a Maltese Freedom Movement
The
Chairman of the Campaign for National Independence CNI
Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici said that now that through the membership of Malta in
the European Union there is a serious threat that the independence of Malta, the
political liberty and legislative sovereignty be totally removed, the need is
felt to set up a Maltese Freedom Movement.
The principal
aim of the Movement is to appeal to individuals and organizations so that with
all democratic means, fight to bring back those invaluable values.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici sent this message in his address at the Annual General Meeting
that was held a few days ago.
He said that the Campaign for National Independence CNI was set up to inform the Maltese and Gozitan people against the threat to the independence of our country, the freedom, sovereignty and moral values, imposed upon us if we become members in the EU.
Now the aim of the Campaign is to, as soon as possible, not allow the loss of these rights.
He insisted that a slim majority of 12,000 votes will quickly decrease as soon as the population begins to feel the bitter consequences that are brought by EU membership.
He
emphasized about the need to hold another referendum next year about the EU
constitution, and said that both the Membership Agreement of 16 April, as well
as the EU Constitutional Treaty are, in certain respects, incompatible with the
Constitution of Malta.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici also said that the principles that the majority of the Maltese
people enjoy are going to be trampled upon by the principles, or lack of them,
that are going to be acquired from the EU.
He
ended his address by hoping that Malta will be the first country that takes the
opportunity of the clause that is being implemented in the EU Constitution to be
able to choose not to remain a member in the EU.
