The protection of citizens in the EU
By Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Campaign for National Independence CNI
It is not true that we cannot leave the European Union
See this European Parliament video that we can leave
It
is said that the forest is burned by its own wood.
This is happening in many European Union countries where their own citizens are committing terrorist acts causing harm to peoples lives and property.
The greatest threat to security in the EU countries is from the inside not from outside, although it appears that there are ties to terrorist organizations in countries outside the EU.
It is easier for a country to protect itself from an outside threat than from threats from its own citizens from inside.

The
internal terrorism phenomenon is spread in many EU countries:
* in Germany,
* in the United Kingdom,
* in France,

*
in Spain,
* in Greece,
* in Denmark,
* in Sweden

*
and other countries.
The Union together of these countries appears to help forthe threats to spread more.
It is certain that it is helping to strengthen and increase the organizations of criminal persons who operate in more than one country.
The
free movement of persons betwween the EU countries, and the free movement of
capital, as well as the easier transport facilities and the removal of
passports and customs controls, made it easier for criminal persons and
organizations to operate in the EU countries.
On
2nd December last, the EU coordinator against terrorism, Gilles de Kerchove,
warned the Ministers for the Interior of the EU countries (including the Maltese
Minister for the Interior), that the threat in increasing of EU citizens who go
to train in terrorist camps, or where terrorist acts are being carried out, and
come back to their countries in the EU.
He said that an ever-increasing number of EU citizens
* that go for training to countries such as

*
Yemen,
* Somalja,
* Afghanistan
* and Pakistan
Apart from these individuals being a threat to the security of their countries, they are also militants who influence other youths of the Europen countries to join them in subversive activity.
The EU coordinator against terrorism
* advised the Ministers for the Interior of the EU countries

*
to make it a criminal offence,
* as it is already in Germany,
* and in Australia,
* for one to participate in a camp where terrorism training is carried out,
* both if it is in the EU,
* or a country outside the EU.
He also said that measures need to be taken to protect against attacks on the computer systems of essential services, such as hospitals and power stations, and on main transport arteries.
The removal of frontiers between the European Union countries, and the removal of the passports and customs controls, make it easire, not only for terrorists, but also for other criminals of one of the EU cuntries to go and carry our their criminal acts in the other EU countries.
And in the case of Malta, this danger is real and not small.
The Malta Police do not have the means to examine the thousands of EU citizens who enter our cuntry through the airport or port, once entry cards were removed, passports and no controls exist any longer by the Customs officers.

It
is a known fact that in some of the EU countries,
* such as Sicily,
* Romania and
* Bulgaria,
* the criminal organizations are very strong.
It is therefore in the interests of the protection of our people that we control the entry of persons coming from certain EU areas, notwithstanding the right of the freedom of movement in the EU of the EU citizens.
The rigth of the citizens of Malta for protection should oevrcome the right of the other EU citizens to enter into our country without any obstacles.
After a number of cases
* of murders,
* armed hold-ups,
* explosions,
* and of robberies have happened,
* Maltese public opinion
* is in favour of implementing controls
*
on the entry of EU citizens
* as is carried out on other persons
* who come to Malta from countries outside the EU.
Two particular murders, that of Ray Agius in Birkirkara in 2008, and the latest one, of Joseph Baldacchino in Valletta, have the murder rubber stamp as implemented by the Mafia.
If the fact that we have entered into the Schengen Zone does not permit us to carry out controls on the EU citizens coming from certain EU areas, it will be better for the protecion of our people to leave Schengen, because the security of our people is greater than the advantages of the lack of the requirement for passports and the lack of controls by the Customs officers.
The great failure of the European Union policy
It
is not only the eurosceptics who criticize the European Union.
Vasilis
Margaras is in favour of the Union of Europe, but he has strong words for the EU
and its leadership and its policy.
We are bringing here the main points of Margaras criticism that appeared in the 19 December 2010 Euobserver.
Too many commentators focus on covering the current European financial problems.
Although the deadlocked financial situation of the EU cannot be disregarded one should also pay attention to the political/ideological vacuum of the European Union.
The crisis of Europe is a crisis of values.
In the last few years there has been no equivalent of the idealism that cemented the European project back in the 1950s.
Ideals do matter and that the EU cannot simply be run by competent technocrats no matter how efficient they may be.
Technocrats may offer a brain to the EU project (although this is debatable!) but they cannot offer a soul.
And
it is the soul that is currently lacking in the European project.
An EU soul searching exercise is thus necessary, but who can carry it out?
As former German Councillor Helmut Schmidt claims, Europe lacks leadership.
Merkel
behaves more like a small Town Mayor whose narrow-mindedness cannot escape the
borders of her little constituency rather than a leader of a united Europe.
In other member states things are not rosy either:
in
France, Sarkozy has been weakened by his internal policies and tries to gain
political momentum by exercising the populist trick of Roma expulsions.
In
Italy, Berlusconi does not offer a leadership model (for many good reasons).
A crisis of ideology is also evident in the EU.
The uncritical acceptance of a deregulated free-market vision within the EU circles has damaged the economy of the Eurozone and is no longer viable.
The EU became a political space where a free-market mentality has gradually taken over without any major thinking and debate.
This is the policy that the vast majority of EU officials take in every Union policy sector.
The
“Celtic tiger” economy was fervently promoted by this establishment as an
example that all Southern European economies had to follow.
Now that Ireland is bankrupt, who will take the blame?
The European Parliament, which was supposed to be the representation instrument of EU citizens, has become the hub of big industry lobbies.
In addition, the ideological poverty of social democracy, along with the weakness of any other left-wing force to provide answers to the ongoing EU problems, has deprived the European public of a viable alternative political solution.

The nation state has more power on the people than a united Europe and this power has brought a re-nationalisation of mentalities. Populism reigns in every part of Europe paving the way for extreme right wing parties to flourish.

There
is a great public unease,
* from egalitarian Sweden
* all the way down to the metropolitan capital of Catalonia.
This unease gives birth to alarming new political movements propagating a discourse of superior national purity.
The EU problems are also an outcome of the lack of competent mechanisms and strong policies.
The Lisbon Treaty did not strengthen the EU economic governance, and the EU should have first seen to it that the common market should be working correctly prior to introducing the euro common currency.
If European leaders would like to regain some of their lost credibility
* they must start speaking the truth about the problems,

*
not hiding the mistakes they made in the past,
* criticize certain countries like
* Portugal,
* Ireland,
* Greece
* and Spain.

Very
few EU officials will say that the Euro benefits the stronger EU economies more
than anyone else.
Because once the small countries adopted the Euro they cannot devalue to export more, big countries like Germany which is more competitive, increased its exports.
Because
of this, while Germany is economically strengthened, the small countries fall
back because they enter into a vicious circle of recession due to the reduction
in welfare expenses.
And the EU in a dishonest manner demands austerity in labour and welfare issues but makes no demand for cuts to arms spending bought from the bigger EU countries
Did you have to contract debt to buy a gift?
By Joseph M Cachia Campaign for National Independence CNI
The
greatest confirmation of wisdom is that of recognizing what is facing you in
your daily life, (John Milton).
In
these times of festivities and celebrations, of angels hanging from Christmas
trees and of glorious singing, it is good for one to keep his feet on the ground
and face reality that many time pressures and suppresses every sense of
recognition and vision of life around us.
When we were children we never stopped from enjoying our usages for this time of the year, as well as one or two small new year’s gifts were never lacking.
However we never had big or luxurious gifts, but we certainly always had much more appreciation and greater happiness.
We
never had much money, but our spending was wiser and no Christmas or New Year
passed by without the happy and moving activities of these feasts.
At the time we used to save more then spend and although we depended on the poor wage (but proud and deserving) of my father, we were always capable of enjoying the hapiness in the company of our families and friends.

Certainly not less than today.
It is certain that the buying of the gifts this year forced us to dig deep in our money box for the lsat cent and also perhaps to get a loan from our friends of parents or probably continue to increase the burden on our credit card which is already burdened with the bank debt.
It appears that no one is spending more money that he now doesn’t have.
However we are continuing to spend other peoples money.
The festive hopes of many are simply resting on the credit, debt which today or tomorrow will have to be paid.
But, we cannot say that we haven’t been warned. Today every is saying the same.
“We are spending too much and on everything.
We are spending money carelessly.
The credit card is on its death bed.
Everything is finished!
This naturally only applies to our credit card.
Not
that of our Government, which notwithstanding the enormous debt that the country
has been led into to give it as a gift to Greece, Ireland and others.

From where is it getting the money?
We are never having any profits and every year we end up with a deficit.
Therefore it has to make use of debt.
This is causing the greatest and most serious threat to our country’s conomy.
How can we remain blind to all this?
However, judgment day is getting nearer.
There is not going to be any choice except to increase the austerity measures that eventually result in more reductions and cuts of the public services.
And the same as its citizens, the country will end up on the edge of poverty!
Notwithstanding all this, do not shy away from giving yourself a present.

Our
Mnisters have already done this!
It’s good to remind you of the inspired thougth of Mark Twain.
“In the end, at the time when I was a child, everyone was poor but no one noticed and everyone was comfortable and was conscious of this”.
“I came to the conclusion that politics is a matter too serious to be left in the hands of politicians” – Charles de Gaulle.
