Six
hundred and ninety Labour delegates voted in favour of the Party saying
YES to the ratification of the European Union Constitution.
118
delegates have voted that the Party should not say YES
According
to the principle of democracy, the will of the majority of the delegates is
implemented and therefore the Labour Party is going to vote in favour of the
Constitution.
According to the same principle of democracy, the will of the minority of the
delegates should be respected.
To
be respected means above all else by ourselves.
For ourselves to respect it, we have to continue to discuss it without
fear.
And thus I have the duty to do.
It
is my intention not to shirk from my duty.
I believe that this European Union Constitution is bad for our people and
especially the workers.
Since I truly believe this, as long as I have strength and power, I should not
remain passive, but should be militant and my duty is to work so that this
European Union Constitution shall never enter into effect in our country.
With the power of the French and Dutch people, this Constitution is not going to
enter into effect as planned.
It
coincided with this obstacle, that the European Union suffered another accident
of the lack of agreement on the budget.
These two events have created a profound crisis in the European Union.
The
consequence is that the European Union cannot remain going on as it was and the
Constitution that was drafted is not considered satisfactory any longer for the
radical changes that the European Union has to do if it want to continue to
exist.
There is need of great changes in the European Union.
It is the opportune time to make the required changes.
I
hope that in the Malta Labour Party we will find courageous, motivated and
zealous youths to work with progressive youths in the European Union countries
to radically reform the Union.
Work to change its capitalist and soul less policy that is disrupting many
working people and their families.
This is the hope today of the 118 Labour delegates.
Tomorrow it will be much bigger.
And the day after it will be the hope of the majority of the delegates.
When hope becomes reality, a new Constitution may be rafted that will not have the shortcomings that the European people are suffering from.
This is a unique opportunity that the Malta Labour Party has to be of benefit
for the European Union, apart from for Malta.
As I believe that this opportunity exists, I feel that it is my duty not to
stop, but duty bound to encourage the Labour youths to undertake this work that
is useful for the Maltese people and for all the people of Europe.
