The greater part of the people from Moslem countries and the Arab countries consider the Western countries, both the European Union as well as the United States of America, as their enemies and as enemies of their religious belief, notwithstanding the fact that the governments of the Western countries and those of the Arab and Muslim countries have friendly relations. 

The sentiments of the people do not coincide with those of the reports between the governments.

The foreign policy of the Government of the United States is feeding the fire amongst the Moslem and Arab peoples and the European Union that does not want to condemn the aggressive policy of the United States of America, is putting the EU countries at the same level as the United States, in the eyes of the Moslem and Arab peoples.
 
Malta, prior to EU membership, was considered as a friendly country by the Moslem and Arab peoples. 

Now that Malta forms part of the EU is being considered as a country similar to the other Western country that support the imperialist policy of the United States of America.

When we became EU members, we embraced the Union policy and more than this, we changed our unique appearance that was not that if the Western countries and we took the appearance of the other European Union countries. 

In the minds of the Moslem and Arab peoples, the Maltese people distanced themselves from them and became one thing like the peoples of the other Western countries.

Although after our country became a European Union member the reports between the Maltese government and the governments of the Moslem and Arab countries remained as those of friends, the peoples of these countries are no longer looking at us with the same sentiments of friendship that they previously had for us.

When we were not members of the European Union we were different from it and our identity was not that of the Union. 

Now we have lost our different identity and became similar to the Union. 

When the Union speaks, it also speaks for Malta. 

If the Union is hated, Malta will also be hated. 

If the EU countries are considered as enemies, Malta will similarly be considered. 

We have lost our identity that used to distinguish us from the other peoples of Europe.

Our people have lost not acquired protection when we joined with other European Union countries. 

The Western countries consider that the threat for them is coming from the Moslem and Arab peoples and these from their view consider the Western countries as wanting to rule over them, as they had done before.

They also consider that the traditions of the Western people are bad and do not want these types of bad traditions to corrupt the Moslem and Arab youths.

Prior to our membership in the EU, although our traditions were not like those of the Moslems and Arab and although our Christian religious belief was well known, the Moslems and Arabs just the same considered us as their great friends. 

Today they consider us like the other peoples of the Western countries. 

That is why we have lost the protection that we had and we cannot continue to enjoy the same peace, when we no longer enjoy the same friendship of the Moslem and Arab peoples.

When our country really embraced a policy of neutrality and non-alignment, our country used to publicly condemn the military interference in Moslem and Arab countries. 

We did not use to agree with military interference in Lebanon. 

We publicly spoke against the invasion of Kuwait by the Iraqis and then against the invasion of Iraq by the United States and their allies. 

We worked against the military attacks against Libya and asked the United Nations Security Council to stop them.

From its side, the European Union supported the aggression against Afghanistan and did not condemn the new aggression against Iraq.
 
Now it is supporting the threat of attack against Syria and in the future, can also take part in measures that may be taken against Iran that may lead not only to commercial sanctions against that country, but also a military attack and perhaps also by means of nuclear arms.
 
In all this, Malta, as a European Union member, would have to do the same as the Union decides.
 
The danger of fighting is increasing not decreasing. 

Therefore the danger that Malta may find itself in fighting increased very much after we became full members of the European Union.

Apart from the threat of arms fighting, we frequently see incidents of religious troubles erupting that can lead to a war between the Christian civilization and the Moslem civilization. 

Some years ago we had the book by Rushdie about Mohammed that disgusted all the Moslems around the world

This week we had the Mohammed caricatures that appeared in Danish journals that raised the great ire among Moslems.

It even led to two governments, those of Libya and Saudi Arabia, to withdraw their ambassadors from Denmark. 

With the Danish people all the Scandinavian countries peoples and all the European Union ended up being involved. Malta as a Union member country would not be able to evade being involved.

it will be of great benefit for our people if it leaves the rest of the European Union to again acquire their identity and neutrality. 

Thus we acquire protection and peace.
