A HIDDEN PLAN FOR THE SHIPYARD?

The Campaign for National Independence (CNI) said that whoever is conversant with the Shipyard should suspect that there is a hidden plan for the Shipyard to appear in a bad situation so that the people will accept that parts of it should be given to the private sector and other parts to “chosen property developers for speculation purposes” and thus the Shipyard will not remain as a big enterprise.

In a press release the CNI said that there are some who are hiding the true reasons about the Shipyard and is blaming the workers when the situation is the fault of the incompetent and irresponsible management during the last few years.

It insisted that the workers are right to insist for a public independent inquiry to examine how and why were great millions lost on the “Fairmount” conversion contract.

This is because it is not right for the blame to be put on workers when the responsibility is that of the executive management.

”If the government continues to deny the workers demand for a public independent inquiry on the “Fairmount” contract where representatives of the people who are paying taxes take part, it would be impossible for it (the Government) to deny the suspicions of many people who insist that the enormous losses on the “Fairmount” were made with the aim of having a pretext for the implementation of the hidden plan to disrupt the Shipyard with the closure of the seven-year Shipyard restructuring plan”

CNI referred to the workers complaints about the Fairmount contract as “many and very grave” among them that

* the Shipyard will not even recover the expenses for the buying of the material used and

* for the payments made to foreign subcontractors that carried out the greater part of the work,

* that many of the works were not carried out correctly

* so much so that it had to be done again by the Shipyard workers,

* that work was changed many times with a loss of time and money for the Shipyard,
* that the Shipyard had accepted the owners conditions that burdened the workplace with too many people,

* that it engaged a Marketing Executive for three years, but he left after six months and

* that the losses are going to amount to €46,587,467 (Lm20 million) on the first project only.

It said that when the workers repeatedly and publicly are making such very grave accusations and are insisting on an independent inquiry, whoever has nothing to hide and whoever wants the truth to come out on the “Fairmount” contract should accept the demand for an inquiry without any delay whatsoever and if he does not do so he shows that he has something to hide.

CNI said that it is fitting that it should be known if it is true that the subcontractors who were responsible for the foreign workers accommodation were paid beforehand for the first and second conversion and have now left our country with the money and therefore the Shipyard shall have to pay again for the foreign workers accommodation.

While it asked whether it was true that these subcontractors were given more than €2 million for nothing,
CNI said that the hiding about this contract is strengthening the opinion of those who insist that there are persons who got well off on it at the expense of the Shipyard itself which has lost greatly.

“In these circumstances how can the Minister responsible for the Shipyard continue to deny an independent public inquiry with the representatives of the taxpayers?” said the CNI in its press release.
