The EU undermines democracy

It is not true that we cannot leave the European Union

The European Union Reform Treaty that the leaders of the Union countries signed last 13 December is going to be presented to the Maltese Parliament, but not for the deputies to discuss it, because they cannot change even one single word from it.

Our Parliamentary deputies have to vote in its favour, or against it or abstain from voting, but not amend it.

Therefore in Parliament we are not going to hear anything except words of praise for the Treaty, perhaps some small criticism, but we are not going to have a true and serious discussion about it.

Once the Government deputies are bound to support that which the Maltese Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs signed on 13 December, it is certain that Parliament is going to vote in favour of the Treaty, whatever it contains.

Therefore it is simply a formality that is going to be brought for discussion before Parliament, because it is going to be passed exactly as it has been drafted and without a single word being changed.

Many are right to insist that this manner of how treaties that the Government had made, are presented before Parliament so that the deputies vote whether the treaties should be ratified, is certainly not a serious manner, and is nothing except a loss of time once the Government deputies are not exempted from the obligation of voting in favour of every treaty signed by the Government, whether they agree with it or not.

They are very right to criticize the manner of how treaties are presented in Parliament to approve them, without previously the Parliament being given the opportunity to discuss them before the government signs them.

The Maltese Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs were very wrong that on 13 December they signed the Union Reform Treaty in Lisbon without previously having discussed what it contains in the Maltese Parliament and assured themselves that the majority of the deputies agree with it.

They have committed a grave abuse when they did not even inform the Maltese public what the Treaty that they went to sign contains, when this is a treaty that is going to bind the Maltese and Gozitans with new rules and conditions which are different  from those that the Maltese people had accepted to join the Union.

Prior to joining the Union, the people had voted in a referendum for our country to join according to Union rules and conditions at the time.

The Treaty of Lisbon is now going to change those rules and conditions and the Maltese people are not going to be given the right to vote in a referendum wheter they want that the regulations and conditions with which they became members in the Union, be changed with those of the Teaty of Lisbon.

If the Government deputies in Parliamenty were not bound to approve what the Prime Minster and the Minister for Foreign Affairs had signed, perhaps it could be said that once the parliamentary deputies represent the people, when the deputies vote in favour of the new Union rules and conditions that the Treaty of Lisbon contains, the people would be expressing themselves.

But this canot be said because the Government deputies are bound to vote in favour of the changed rules and conditions, whetever they are, good or damaging to the people.

All this makes a farse of the parliamentary democracy that we have.

And the European Union which insists that no referendum be held about its new treaty, is itself undermining the system of democracy in the country.

Membership in the EU increases our debt

It should be said that the Maltese people this year are going to pay €140,000 every day to the European Union, and therefore in the first three days of the New Year the people are going to have paid  €420,000.

This was published in the official Government Budget for the year 2008, which shows that our country should pay the Union the sum of €51,245,000.

The pople should understand that we are going to pay these €51,245,000 from the taxes that the Government collects from the people, or from the debt that the Government incurs each year, upon which the Government then has to pay interests from the taxes that it collects from the people

For the last 20 years the Government had to incur a debt each year because it always spent more than it collected.

And today the Government ended up with more than  €3,062,000,000 debt.

With all this debt and we still have to pay the EU more than €51 million this year, notwithstanding that the Government this year is going continue to incur debt.

Apart from the cash that every year we have to pay the EU, our country entered into more expenses and very big expenses due to Union membership.

The change of the Maltese currency for that of the Union, the Ewro, has cost us millions of Ewros in expenses.

To enter into the Union Schengen Zone, we have incurred a great expense of millions of Ewros, and we are going to have a great recurrent expenditure each year to implement the Schengen agreement that removes all passports and customs controls for those who come from the Union.

To meet with the laws and regulations that the Union makes each month, with the meetings that the Union holds more than one per week, and with the documents that the Union issued daily, our country has to spend many more millions of Ewros each year.

The total expenditure is so great when all the expenses that are incurred because of Union membership, that neither the Government nor the Union want to give information to the people what the taxes that are paid by the Maltese people have to make good for.

Ands all these expenses and all this debt was made, and is being made, after our country has sold much of its wealth that the Maltese people had, such as

* the Mid-Med Bank,

* the share that the people had in the Lombard Bank,

* the share that the people had in TeleMalta,

* the share that the people had in Medserv and

* Tug Malta,

* in the Post,

* in the Public Lotto,

and many other state enterprises.

All this destruction of the Maltese people’s wealth was made for the European Union, so that it accepts us as members.

It is a real bitter price for the people to see dismantled all that with so much prudence and sacrifices of those before us, for the whim of those who did not have the ability to lead our people in independence and freedom.

The people’s rights were not given by the EU

The new year that we have just began should open the eyes of many Maltese people and they should start to understand how they had played the fool with them and deceived them that membership in the Union was going to be a new Spring for our country.

Now that we have introduced the Ewro, the time for endless propaganda for it has ended.

The people are going to suffer the consequences of the Ewro and shall believe how it is going to increase their cost of living.

It is going to prove right those foreigners who came to Malta and told us that we were mad that we were happy with the Ewro because it is going to make us cry, as it had done to them in their country.

But those among us who have sold their soul
to the EU, are not concerned with what the people are going to suffer with the introduction of the Ewro.

For them it is more important that Malta does not remain independent, but would be integrated in the Union at all costs.

Many were eager for us to become members in the European Union because they were afraid that there will be a majority that democratically chooses a Government that would not protect fundamental human rights and would not govern in a democratic manner.

Their fear led them to trust more the Union foreigners than their Maltese brothers.

This pitiful opinion of these stupid Maltese witnesses their colonial mentality, that makes them believe that if there is a threat in our country for the protection of fundamental huma rights and for democracy, we Maltese would not find enough strength in ourselves to fight to preserve the protection of the fundamental human rights and the democratic life of our people.

These spineless Maltese who want the protection of the EU foreigners against their Maltese brothers, are forgetting that the fundamental human rights that we enjoy and the democratic rights that we have, were fought for and won for our people by those before us against the foreigners that used to rule us, and were not given to us by the foreigners, because they denied them to us for a long time.

As they have deceived the people with EU membership and about the entry of the Ewro, they are doing the same about the Schengen agreement and the removal of passport and customs control on who comes, and what comes, from the EU countries.

The consequences are going to be a greater number of persons who could be a threat to our citizens and property, come to our country from the Union countries, among them from Sicily, without any controls.

It would be easier to traffic drugs and arms and the security for our citizens is going to be reduced for citizeins and property.

And the irony is that for all this damage, we will have to pay much more expenses.

All this to boast that we are nearer Europe and part of it, not an independent country.
