Suggestion by Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici about illegal immigrants: boats to leave Malta
The
leader of the Campaign for National Independence, Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici,
yesterday insisted suggested that illegal immigrants should be provided with
boats so that they could go with them “wherever
they want to go”.
He
insisted that however this does not change anything from our obligation to save
them from a boat that is in distress and to give them food.
While addressing a press conference about the “damage” that we are suffering with EU membership, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici said that where it wants the EU applies repatriation and recently there was agreement between it and Senegal where 18,000 illegal immigrants were sent back by the EU.
Dr
Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici insisted that if we were to give each illegal immigrant
Lm2,000 to leave, this would cost us half the actual expenditure because each
illegal immigrant is costing us Lm13 each day, that is Lm4,745 each year and
therefore, 2,500 immigrants would cost us around Lm11 million each year.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said that this will not only save us money but will also prevent certain social consequences to us among them that male illegal immigrants marry Maltese wives for convenience, remain in Malta even if the marriage is annulled and the wife will start demanding social benefits to maintain her children.
This said Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici is apart from the trouble and fighting that some of them get into and also the diseases.
While
he explained the arrival of illegal immigrants as “a
regular and organized invasion”, the
Maltese ex-Prime Minister said that if we applied the local law we would have
had to send them away, but due to EU membership we cannot apply it.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici mentioned how while the EU is insisting that after three
months we should set them free and also accept members of their families, it is
now also criticizing us that we are not doing enough to integrate them in
society.
The
speaker said that in this manner we will encourage more the illegal immigrants
to come because we cannot send them back due to it (the EU). This is costing us
money when the Government should allow them to go.
Apart from illegal immigration, the Labour ex-Leader also mentioned the Ewro and
said that presently a propaganda campaign is being conducted that is costing us
thousands of Liri when with a fixed exchange rate the people should not be
worried except of having to make the conversion from one currency to another.
While on the pretext of the Ewro propaganda is being made so that from an EU antagonist the country will turn in favour, the speaker also referred to the fact that the Ewro is going to be on the schools curriculum and said that this is going to take the place of another subject.
He explained this step as “a whitewashing of the minds and misinformation because we are certain that no one is going to mention the disadvantages of the Ewro”.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said tat the biggest problem with the Ewro is that it is not
going to help the competitivity of our country because it is going to increase
our expenses.
He
said that European countries themselves are saying that the high rate of
exchange of the Ewro is leaving a negative impact on exports.
Dr Bonnici also criticized the wastage in the EU and said that this is in its
DNA so much so that it has itself admitted that around €1 million are being
stolen each day while there are several EU officers who are being investigated
for fraud and theft of its finances.
Dr
Mifsud insisted that the EU funds are not helping the people but are only going
to certain sectors that are getting rich.
