It’s
not in the interest of the Labour Party to vote YES with reservations for the
European Constitution that renews the Athens agreement of 2003.
Today the majority of the people understood that the 2003 agreement is
disadvantageous and greatly damaging to our country.
In
the time that there still is to the next General Election, this majority will
continue to increase once the bad effects and the harsh consequences of this
agreement are felt more.

That is why the Labour Party should not vote in favour of the 2003 agreement
that is part of the European Constitution, when the majority of the people today
is not in its favour and tomorrow, a bigger majority will not be in its favour.
If in 2003 its opposition to the Athens agreement made the Labour Party lose,
the fact that today the Labour Party abstains from voting in favour of the 2003
agreement, should be a factor that makes the Labour Party win in the next
General Election.
Because in the next Election it will be important that the majority of the people will have the hope that the Labour Party in Government will implement the promise that it had made on 9 November 2003 that it will work restlessly to overcome all the negative aspects of the 2003 agreement.
The people will lose this hope if now the Labour Party yields and votes YES to the 2003 agreement with all its negative aspects that form part of the European Constitution.
The
five reservations for the YES vote in favour of the European Constitution will
in no manner overcome all the negative aspects of that 2003 Athens agreement
The Labour Party has nothing to lose if it abstains from voting for the European
Constitution.
Now
that the vast majority of the French and Dutch voted NO to it not because they
are against the European Union, no one can accuse the Labour Party that would
have abstained from voting against the European Constitution, that it is against
the European Union.
We shall be dreaming if we think that in the next General Election Malta’s
relations with the European Union are not going to be at the centre of the
electoral campaign.
The greater pressure on the Labour Party to work so as not to let the very bad situation of our country from continuing to deteriorate with the effect and due to the consequences of the 2003 agreement with the EU will not allow the Party from escaping from this very vital issue for the future of our country.

The Labour Party should not appear that it is now renouncing to work to overcome all the negative disadvantageous and damaging aspects of the agreement with the EU, by now voting YES to those same negative aspects of the agreement which are part of the European Constitution.
From what was written last Sunday in the Nationalist Party newspaper, we can have an insight of what the Nationalist propaganda against the Labour Party will be at the next Election.
After the Nationalists encouraged as much as possible the Labour Party so that during the Extraordinary Conference to decide to vote YES with reservations in favour of the ratification of the European Constitution, they wrote thus:
“Europe
separated the Nationalist Party from the Labour Party for a long time. Now that
an important step is going to be made where the Labour Party recognizes that it
was mistaken when it conducted a campaign against Europe and now, because it has
recognized the mistake, changed its policy. On the European Union, The
Nationalist Party has been vindicated. It is in this sense that this week is
also an important week for the Nationalist Party because it is going to see the
Labour Party follow the Nationalist Party policy. The greatest weapon in
politics is to convince your political adversary!”
We are going to be in this absurd situation.
The majority of the people are blaming the Nationalist Party for having made a mistake with the conclusion of the 2003 agreement.
And the Labour Party is going to prove the Nationalist Party right for the agreement that it had concluded in 2003 by now voting YES to it!
And
we are in a very absurd situation that if the Labour Party agrees to vote with
the Nationalists, they will be strengthening the Labour Party and we who are
insisting that the Party should not vote with the Nationalists, will be
considered and insulted that we are weakening the Labour Party!
I do not think that Gonzi wishes well to the Labour Party more than we wish it.
And I also do not think that he is encouraging the Labour Party to vote YES, to help the Labour Party to win the next General Election.
The
Labour Delegates of good will would do well to reflect on all this.
