The
Campaign for National Independence CNI
welcomed the introduction of Article I-59 in the European Union Draft
Constitution with which a member country can leave the EU.
In
a press release, it explained that the mentioned Constitution as one which “is
not satisfactory” but is going to make it possible so that when the people,
with a simple majority, decide to leave to EU it could do so.
“The negative impact that membership is going to have on the different sectors
of the people can lead to a situation in a short time where more people shall be
against membership than in favour”.
CNI
said that this Article contradicts the declaration by Prime Minister Eddie
Fenech Adami when he said that the decision that was taken by the majority of
the people for our country to become EU members is “irrevocable”.
It
insisted that many of those who voted in favour of membership did so because the
Prime Minister had declared that this membership does not affect the
Constitution of Malta.
But now, by means of Article I-10.I of the Draft Constitutional Treaty, the
European Constitution will be superior to the Constitution of the member
countries.
Another problem that the CNI is seeing in the EU Constitution is the right of foreign persons to come and live in our country.
This is because the great number of foreigners that come to live among us will leave a negative impact on the renting of homes and the problem of the lack of houses for rent will be increased.
